I haven’t watched television for decades; it’s been almost as long since I listened to AM or FM radio while driving. I just don’t enjoy the mindless chatter and patter of radio hosts.

Most of the time, I listen to streaming music or podcasts.

But lately, I’ve been doing something else: I’ll start up a voice conversation with Grok and turn my drive time into a classroom.

Sometimes I’ll ask about the history of the towns that I’m driving past; sometimes I’ll dive into ancient history; one time I spent a few hours brushing up on advanced physics topics like spectroscopy—Fine structure, the Zeeman effect, the Stark effect, and Hyperfine splitting.

I did that on the Pennsylvania Turnpike while I was driving to visit Randell Mills in Pennsylvania in 2024.

The use of AI in this way is a much better utilization of otherwise wasted driving time than anything we’ve ever had before—except for perhaps audiobooks. In essence, AI is an audiobook—but one than you can converse with.

So it was last Thursday that I found myself driving north, using Tesla autopilot on a lonely stretch of Indiana Bible-belt highway after dark, when I spotted a billboard as I drove past with this excerpt (from the King James Bible - KJV):

¹⁷ From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

The translation that I saw on the billboard said “Kingdom of heaven is near”, but the meaning of “at hand” in the KJV is essentially the same.

Now I knew that the word “repent”, in modern times, carries with it a sense of somber regret; a turning away from sin, tinged with a sense of shame and contrition.

The fire and brimstone preachers of the deep South would hurl that word from their pulpits during steamy Sunday morning sermons using stern, deep-voiced tones and a sharply upturned finger, to drive a sense of fearful respect into the hearts of parishioners who were fanning their sweaty brows with that week’s church circular.

But I was curious about the etymology of the word “repent”. Where exactly did this word come from (I suspected French)?

So I asked Grok as I drove. And I learned:

Grok: The English verb “repent” entered the language in the late 13th/early 14th century (Middle English repenten) from Old French repentir (”to regret, repent”).

Latin root: From Late Latin / Vulgar Latin repaenitīre or Medieval Latin repoenitēre, built on Latin paenitēre (”to regret, be sorry”) + the intensive prefix re-. The core Latin paenitēre comes from poena (”punishment, penalty”), ultimately from Greek poinē (”penalty, fine”).

This gives the word a flavor of regret tied to consequence or atonement (compare words like penitent, penance, penalty).

“Repent” is a heavy word, one that carries with it a somber timbre.

But that word … it came into being more than a thousand years after this particular passage of the bible was originally written.

“Interesting” I thought to myself.

And I drove on.

So next I asked Grok:
“what was the original text in the Bible for this passage? Did the words then have the same meaning at the time it was written?”

And I learned something new, and wondrous from my chat with an AI.

I learned that the original writing of the Gospel of Matthew occurred around 80-90 AD; that this passage was written originally in Koine Greek; and that it was translated to Latin in the “Vulgate” (the first “Bible”) by Jerome around 400 AD at the urging of Pope Damasus I.

And it was here that an interesting change in meaning first appeared.

About the Gospel of Matthew

Dating: circa 80–90 CE is the most widely accepted range among modern scholars, though some push it as late as 100 CE. The Gospel appears to reference the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple (70 CE) as a past event, particularly in the “desolation” passages — suggesting it was written after 70 CE.

It also seems to draw on the Gospel of Mark (generally dated ~65–70 CE) as a source, so it must postdate Mark. Earlier tradition sometimes argued for a pre-70 date, but this requires explaining away the Temple references.

Authorship:
Almost certainly not the apostle Matthew. The Gospel is technically anonymous — the attribution to Matthew the tax collector (one of the Twelve) comes from later church tradition, most notably Papias of Hierapolis (~125 CE), who wrote that “Matthew composed the oracles in the Hebrew language.” But this creates problems:

The Gospel is written in polished Greek, not translated from Hebrew/Aramaic. It relies heavily on Mark — an eyewitness apostle would have little reason to depend so thoroughly on a secondary source. The “Matthew” figure in the text himself plays a very minor role.

The dominant scholarly view today is that it was written by an anonymous Jewish-Christian author deeply versed in the Hebrew scriptures, likely in Syrian Antioch or a similar urban center with a mixed Jewish-Gentile Christian community. The apostolic name was attached later to lend the text authority.

So then Grok actually spoke to me the original Greek for Matthew 4:17:

”Μετανοεῖτε, ἤγγικεν γὰρ ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν”

It was amazing to hear it offer that phrase in actual spoken Greek!

Next, I asked it to tell me what it would have sounded like in Aramaic, the language Jesus would have spoken.

But I quickly noted something: that first Greek word “Μετανοεῖτε”.

In English letters and phonetics, it is “metanoia”. That word carries the meaning of an inward change: metanoia literally means a “transformation of mind, a turning around of one's whole orientation.”

It didn’t originally mean “penance” or “regret” or “sorrowful contrition.”

It meant: “change your thinking. Re-orient your mind.”

The original Latin translation by Jerome was:
"Exinde coepit Iesus praedicare et dicere: Paenitentiam agite, appropinquavit enim regnum caelorum."

which translated is:
"From that time Jesus began to preach and to say: Do penance, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

This time from Claude:

The phrase “Paenitentiam agite” is crucial. Jerome translated the Greek word (μετανοεῖτε) as “do penance” — framing it as an outward act or practice. The Greek original, however, carries the meaning of an inward change: metanoia literally means a transformation of mind, a turning around of one’s whole orientation.

This translation choice had enormous consequences. The Catholic Church built much of its sacramental theology of penance (confession, satisfaction, absolution) partly on this rendering.

When Erasmus produced his fresh Greek New Testament in 1516 and pointed out that metanoeite really means “change your mind” — not “do penance” — it was genuinely explosive.

Martin Luther seized on it, and it fed directly into the Reformation critique of the penitential system. Luther’s very first of his 95 Theses in 1517 essentially hinges on this exact word.

It’s a remarkable example of how a single translation choice can echo through centuries of history.

While driving and chatting with AI, I had accidentally stumbled across the very foundations of modern Protestantism: it hinged on the faithful translation of the Greek word Μετανοεῖτε . “Metanoia”.

The 95 Theses and Luther’s Doctrine of Repentance

“When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said ‘Repent’ (Mt. 4:17), he willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.”

This is explicitly built on Matthew 4:17 and the metanoia vs. paenitentiam agite distinction. Luther opens the entire 95 Theses by citing that exact verse and immediately pivoting on what “repent” really means — framing the whole document around the argument that Christ commanded an inward, lifelong transformation of heart, not a sacramental system of external acts.

Thesis 2 makes the point even more explicit:

“This word cannot be understood as referring to the sacrament of penance, that is, confession and satisfaction, as administered by the clergy.”

It was Erasmus’s 1516 Greek New Testament that gave Luther the scholarly ammunition to make this argument publicly. Luther had the theological instinct; Erasmus handed him the philological proof. Luther himself reportedly said that Erasmus laid the egg that Luther hatched — though Erasmus spent the rest of his life deeply uncomfortable with what the Reformation became.

The meaning of a single word led to the pivot of centuries for religious thought.

Oh, but the learning continues. Next, I asked Claude about John 1:1.

Tell me about John 1:1—“In the beginning was the Word.” Logos.

And Claude responded:

Transliterated:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

So next I asked:

that word “logos” - was “Word” really the best translation?
Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ λόγος, καὶ ὁ λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν θεόν, καὶ θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος.

And Claude replied:

This is a genuinely rich question, and the short answer is: “Word” is a defensible but impoverished translation that captures one dimension of logos while flattening out most of what made the term so philosophically loaded.

What logos actually meant:

By the 1st century CE, logos had accumulated centuries of meaning across multiple intellectual traditions—

In ordinary Greek, it could mean word, speech, reason, account, reckoning, proportion, argument, or discourse — depending entirely on context. It was one of the most semantically dense words in the language.

In Heraclitus (6th century BCE), logos was the underlying rational principle that governs all things — the hidden order behind the apparent chaos of the universe. Most people live unaware of it even though everything happens according to it.

In Stoic philosophy, which was the dominant educated worldview of the Hellenistic and Roman world, logos was the divine rational principle permeating and organizing the cosmos — sometimes called the logos spermatikos (”seed-bearing word/reason”), the generative force embedded in all matter.

It was essentially their concept of God, or at least of divine intelligence.

In Philo of Alexandria — a Jewish philosopher and contemporary of Jesus who tried to synthesize Hebrew scripture with Greek philosophy — logos was the intermediary between the transcendent God and the material world. Almost a divine mediating mind.

John is writing into all of this simultaneously.

“Word” in English suggests primarily speech — something spoken or written. It’s passive, referential. But logos in John 1:1 carries the active, generative, rational sense at least as much as the verbal sense. “Reason,” “rational principle,” or “meaning” would capture different facets better.

Some translators and theologians have tried alternatives:

• “Reason” — gets the philosophical dimension but loses the personal/relational quality

• “Mind” — used by some (Philo’s usage leans this way)

• “Meaning” — captures the idea that ultimate reality is inherently intelligible, which John seems to imply

• “The divine creative principle” — accurate but unwieldy

David Bentley Hart in his 2017 translation simply kept “Logos” untranslated, arguing that no English word can do the job.

Jerome in the Vulgate used “Verbum” — Latin for word/speech — which anchored the “Word” translation in Western Christianity for a millennium. When Tyndale and then the KJV translators came along, they followed that tradition.

“Word” had also accumulated enormous theological weight by then — it connected naturally to the Hebrew concept of dabar (God’s spoken word as creative act — “And God said, let there be light”) which John’s audience would have known.

So “Word” isn’t wrong — it’s just one facet of a gem that has many. The real genius of John 1:1 is that logos was doing triple duty: speaking to Jewish readers through the dabar tradition, to Stoic-educated Greeks through their logos cosmology, and to Platonists through the idea of a divine rational principle. A single English word collapses that multiplicity into one dimension.

It’s arguably the most untranslatable word in the New Testament.

How fascinating.

A Large Language Model—the very skeleton of modern AIs, built from words—or more precisely, built from Logos—knows the most interesting use of the word “Word” in the New Testament. I’d like to have a word with you about that….

Maybe we should call them Large Logos Models, hmm? Because LLMs today are tools that actually work with “concept vectors” in high-dimensional space, rather than simply “predicting the next word.” (See my post about Linear Algebra here.)

So it was that, on a dark and quiet drive through the verdant fields of northern Indiana one night—as a Tesla AI did the actual driving, no less—An LLM taught me the crucial translation of Matthew 4:17 — one that led to divergent views of the New Testament centuries ago.

That’s a fact to marvel and cogitate over, isn’t it? An AI taught me Greek, Latin, and theology just because I was curious about the origin of a specific word.

So the next time you’re driving somewhere…turn your car into a classroom.

I’m still stunned by the genius of Craig Stone’s recent Geodesy work (his chart is in the banner of this post.)

He created an amazing visualization that confirms, in an elegant way, that “something really is different” with respect to the motion of the geographic North Pole in 2026.

It’s a brilliant visual that—in my opinion—belongs in future textbooks for its simplicity, beauty and insight. More about it below.

The thing that grabbed me by the lapels today was this: what inspires us to have original ideas like these? That thought returned me to an article I had written a few years ago about Memetic Injection.

But let’s start here.

In a recent post, I had written about the North Pole—

Using AI, I was able to create a few useful charts at pole.mjttech.com that helped satisfy my own curiosity about the novel motion that is currently happening with the North Pole.

I was inspired to do this by the work of other researchers and titans in this field of inquiry: The Ethical Skeptic, Craig Stone, Tami Camarata, Ben Davidson, and the anonymous genius who goes by ZachariasPro on X.

In particular, I was intrigued by what ZachariasPro has been posting about: the fact that the two components of the “wobble” of the North Pole have dramatically reduced in magnitude in the past few years. Fascinating discovery, that.

I wanted to find a way to see that wobble phenomenon for myself to corroborate his findings, using relatively simple historical chart data while animating it over time to visualize the changes.

The post I wrote a few weeks ago describes HOW I was able to create these charts, without really getting into the question of why. Because that is something that I only started to figure out today.

Why. More on that below.

To set the foundation here: one of the charts that I made was this one, which showed something curious about March of 2026: there were days when the distance that the North Pole moved was the smallest “step length” that had occurred in more than 50 years. The red bars are the days of March in 2026.

To understand more about the “what”, read that earlier post I wrote. But here’s the gist: in that chart above, the five days of March 2026 with the red dots below them (March 7, 13, 14 and 20) were those days where the distance that the pole moved was smaller than on that same day of March for 50 years.

Why is the pole doing this? The short answer is: nobody really knows, but there are some new theories being proposed by Ethical Skeptic, Ben Davidson, ZachariasPro and Craig Stone that have significant implications for our planet.

That was one element that got me going down this road in the first place: the oddities in the March 2026 polar movement are because of the cessation of polar wobble, as ZachariasPro has been writing and analyzing (much more available from ZachariasPro here, on github).

Anyhow, a few weeks ago, I posted another chart on X from my new tool: I saw something odd in the motion of the pole in the 1999-2000 year when I was flipping through the animation sequences. Later, I saw another similar anomaly in 2005-2006.

I jokingly said “did an arctic penguin knock over the laser level or what” which got a chuckle out of Craig Stone (there are no penguins in the arctic, of course.)

But when he looked at some of my animations that showed some strange “pirouettes” that the North Pole made in certain years, something else clicked for him.

Craig has been working on this topic for years, has brilliant skills at analysis and presentation, and also has a depth of insight about what it all might mean that is matched by very few on the planet.

He’s been talking on X and writing some papers about “Phase space” for a while, but he suddenly found a brilliant way to make his point understandable to everyone.

You don’t really need to understand everything about this chart below to easily see the obvious point it makes: the data for the yellow line is 2026, and the blue lines represent data for the prior 50+ years.

2026 is noticeably different.

That is a powerful graphic, in its simplicity.

To explain this chart simply: Craig is graphing something that relates the angular position of the North Pole on any given day (an analogy for angular position: think of the angle ϴ made by the second hand of a clock—relative to, say, 3pm—as it sweeps around in a circle) versus the angular velocity ω : that is, how quickly the clock face’s rim is “swept” past during any given movement of the second hand.

Unlike a watch, whose second hand moves in precisely equal steps (360 degrees in 60 seconds, or about 6 degrees per “tick” of the second hand) the movement of the North Pole is more chaotic; it moves in a roughly circular path that takes sometimes more, and sometimes less than a year to return to its starting position (the same angle ϴ ) and the distance that it moves on any tick (a day, in the case of polar movement data) can vary significantly.

What this chart above shows, roughly speaking, is the varying and sometimes chaotic relationship between the angle and the speed of motion of the geographic North Pole for any given day over 50+ years.

Going back to our watch analogy: if the second hand of a watch moved the way that these squiggles move, you would sometimes see the second hand take more or less than a second before it moved; sometimes you’d see it move “backwards”; and sometimes you’d see the second hand move more or less than 6 degrees per tick.

The brilliant insight Craig has is that it’s sometimes much easier to see what’s going on in “phase space”, rather than coordinates of x, y and time.

Even if you don’t grasp all of this: what we can clearly see is that in March of 2026, the Earth’s North Pole moved in ways that were far outside the ‘usual’ over the prior 50+ years. You can see, too, that there were two other oddities: one in 1973, and one in 2005.

My question to Craig today was this: is 2026 just another anomalous year, after which things will return to “normal”?

Or does it lie far enough outside the expected pattern to be a harbinger of something bigger to come? ZachariasPro has some thoughts about this, so keep an eye on his X channel.

Here was Craig’s feedback about my pole motion charts:

What I realized today is that something that I was inspired to do (create those pole motion animation charts) may also have helped to kindle the tiniest additional spark that helped Craig look at something differently that he’d been studying for quite some time.

And maybe, in a small, subtle way, it helped lead to his breakthrough.

So WHY was I inspired to do what I did—create this web tool and charts? It wasn’t simply curiosity, although that was an element. I didn’t do it to gain any kind of recognition; I’m not an academic researcher in this field. I’m just an armchair nobody with a little talent, time, and inspiration.

Curiosity got me started; but once I had gotten the basic charts working, something else nagged at me: maybe if I animate these charts over time, I’ll see patterns that are hiding in the data.

Which I did, and there were.

Perhaps I was the first to see these patterns in this particular way. But sharing them inspired others.

That drive and inspiration, in my humble view, came from somewhere else: a God nod.

This takes me back several years to a post I had written about the genesis of ideas:

What I also want to dive into deeply in a future post is this: what, exactly, is the inspiration for that very first, original (creative) idea? From where—and how—did the very first instance of an idea or creative act actually spring forth?

I didn’t fully develop that idea in any other post: but I believe that genesis of truly novel, new ideas cannot just be due to the random firing of neurons in a slug of brain matter. There is something that comes before: the original inspiration for the animating idea precedes, and is outside of, the brain that conceived it.

I think that this process:

inspiration + curiosity, talent → idea → ignites a spark in another’s mind

… is fundamentally important.

The God whisper — the genesis inspiration — starts it all.

I was inspired to make those charts and animations…because someone else needed them as a nudge to help germinate another set of ideas.

That’s the Why.

The SR-71’s first test flight took place in 1964, and it was a key tool in the Cold War between the West and the former USSR. Flying at speeds above Mach 3 (over 2,000 miles per hour) this reconnaissance plane was almost magical.

It was created by Lockheed Martin’s Advanced Development Projects division, known as the “Skunk Works”. One day in the mid 70’s while my father worked at Ramstein Air Force Base, West Germany, I think I might have seen the SR-71 zip overhead.

I was standing in the backyard of the house we were living in, and I heard a strange aircraft sound that I didn’t recognize. I was used to fighter jets and transport planes flying overhead all the time—but this one was different.

I looked up and saw it: whatever it was, it flew impossibly fast from horizon to horizon in the blink of an eye. It was sleek, black and crazy fast.

Let’s take a step in a different direction for a moment and then circle back to the SR-71 later.

Last weekend, Emily and I watched the new documentary “S4: The Bob Lazar Story”.

This new documentary is the story about a man who claims to have been part of a secret program that was reverse engineering flying craft of non-human origin.

UFOs.

It’s been hotly debated for almost 30 years; is Bob telling us honestly what he personally experienced and saw in the desert near Groom Lake Nevada (“Area 51”)?

Is it true that there are “anti-gravity” craft not created by humans that we are reverse engineering in a secret facility? Bob was featured on Joe Rogan back in 2020, and he was also recently analyzed by a body language expert.

Is he lying? Telling the truth? Watch the new documentary—and decide for yourself.

I personally have a reason to believe he’s truthful, and here’s why: I have an odd connection to the SR-71 that makes the Bob Lazar story more compelling for me.

It was the summer of 1988, and I was in between my junior and senior years in college. I was living in an apartment on campus that didn’t have air conditioning, and it was sweltering.

At night, I would take a cooler down to the field house sports complex, and fill Ziploc bags full of ice that I’d then put in my bed to cool off while I slept.

I was studying Electrical Engineering, Physics and Optics at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana. Rose Hulman was, and still is, one of the best kept secrets in engineering education in the country: it was ranked #1 by US News and World Report’s Best Colleges ranking for more than 20 years.

The year before, I had worked on several special projects that got the attention of the faculty. In one of them, I worked with a professor who used to work on pulsed energy weapons systems on the top of a mountain range in New Mexico while he was still in the military before retiring to become a professor.

In 1987, he had received a request from a local power utility that had a difficult problem they couldn’t solve—and he recruited me to write some software to help him do the analysis.

There was a coal mine beneath the fields in western Indiana, and they were using a huge electric grinding machine to bite into the coal seams to extract the coal.

In the morning, when they started up the machine, they’d roll it toward the wall of the mine and as its spinning teeth ground into the coal seam the massive motor would temporarily slow down as the grinding began.

The “back EMF” and current draw from the motor was causing the power grid voltage in the area to sag (a “brownout”) and it caused havoc for the local farmers; their lights would flicker and their microwaves, ovens, and alarm clocks would reset and flash “0:00” every morning.

They complained to the power company, who tried to figure out a solution to the issue. But it was a complex problem, and they reached out to the experts at Rose Hulman for help.

So it was that I found myself sitting out in a lonely cornfield, miles from nowhere with Dr. Brockhurst and an early IBM PC in the back of a panel van in early February—in miserable zero-degree Fahrenheit winter conditions.

Brockhurst had built a powerline connection board on a plywood base, and we were parked near a power pole out in a cornfield. I could see nothing but frozen leftover corn stalks from the prior fall’s harvest in all directions.

We attached equipment to a 12,000-volt power line to take strip-chart recorder measurements of voltage and current on the power grid so that Dr. Brockhurst could diagnose the brownout problem.

I was freezing my ass off and trying to type with gloves on. But we managed to get the recording software going, and we took an hour or two of sample data. We were able to signal process the data, and Brockhurst was later able to design a switched capacitor bank solution for the electric utility.

My work with Brockhurst got the attention of the faculty, and later I was asked to work on a GOES satellite receiver project with another student. My teammate built a downlink receiving circuit that could capture weather satellite signals from the GOES satellite system; he built a decoder that stored raw digital signal data on a PC.

I wrote signal processing software to take that raw data, reconstruct the vertical and horizontal retrace information, and draw the image from the weather satellite on a computer screen. It was pretty cool getting to see essentially live satellite weather data from an Earth observing satellite.

And yes: the Earth appeared round 🌍 in those live images I saw from space.

Those two projects built my reputation, and as summer approached, I was recommended for a new program that was starting over the summer. Rose Hulman started something called the “Entrepreneur in Residence” program that year.

They brought in a former Rose Hulman graduate who had been in the private sector for 10 years and paired him up with students to help productize some research that had been done by professors in other departments.

The first person to hold that E.I.R. position was Russell “Rusty” Holcomb; he was a mechanical engineer eleven years older than me, and I was his first student intern.

He had an office down in the bowels of one of the buildings, and I found my way down to meet him that first day. When I walked in, he had some pieces of metal on his desk alongside some other memorabilia. “Hey, Russ! Glad to meet you. What’s that metal you have on your desk?” I asked as an icebreaker.

“It’s titanium” he said. “From an aircraft I used to work on.” I would come to find out that the aircraft Rusty worked on was the SR-71 Blackbird. Russ was a mechanical engineer, and he had a dream job for a while: he worked at Lockheed Martin in the Los Angeles Area.

As we chatted over the months while we worked, he told me that he used to leave his house and sometimes drive down to the Burbank Airport near Hollywood; from there, he’d fly to Las Vegas for work. In Vegas, he’d take a charter plane (called the JANET flights) from McCarran International Airport (now renamed Harry Reid International Airport) to get to his job site.

The JANET flights took top-secret cleared workers out to the Nevada desert.

To Area 51.

That is where the Blackbird was tested and developed under the cover of secrecy.

I was so tickled to be working for a guy who had spent time working at Area 51—on the SR-71! What a story for a young impressionable student like me.

As part of the EIR project, I worked with Russ on some new technology that used air pressure to make fine measurements of gaps between plates of metal, accurate down to 1/1000th of an inch. The reason for doing that had to do with aluminum injection molded transmission casings for vehicles.

At the time, Chrysler had a manufacturing plant making these transmission casings for cars and trucks. The machines were made up of big slabs of steel that came together in the shape of a cube about six feet on a side.

Each face of the cube was machined out to form a “mold” of the part they were manufacturing. To make a part, the cube would be brought together and bolted shut, leaving a void the shape of the part they were making inside; then they would inject molten aluminum into the cavity to form the part.

The problem was that the faces of the mold would “blow back” slightly when the hot metal was injected; if the blowback gap exceeded certain thresholds, the walls of the part they were making would end up being too thin—it wouldn’t pass QA inspection and would have to be discarded.

To minimize loss, they wanted a way to measure the blowback distance between the faces of the mold plates; if the gap was acceptably small, they knew they’d have a good part.

Thus, the air pressure sensors. That was a way to passively and safely measure small gaps with large steel die parts.

Russ was working with some professors who engineered the nozzles and parts, and I was tasked with converting the pressure data into digital form for processing on a computer.

I was a Star Trek nerd, so I built a display using Turbo Pascal for graphics and it had a sequence of arrow markers moving up and down in a set of six channels, showing the maximum and minimum gaps that were measured during parts manufacturing. It looked like the screens in Sick Bay when Dr. McCoy would treat patients on Star Trek.

Russ loved the visual, but one day he said “hey, we want to take this thing to go test in the actual Chrysler factory. Those auto worker guys are suspicious of us slick college boys coming in with our fancy technology. Can you add an American flag on the top right corner of the display?”

I worked out some algorithms to draw the star-spangled banner using computer graphics, and I got it done for him. The project turned out to be a success, and the whole system based on my early software was eventually improved and licensed by “Matrix Technologies” to install at other car part manufacturing sites.

Russ would go on to leave his position at Rose Hulman and work for Matrix Technologies for a few years.

I graduated in 1989, leaving Indiana to go work for TRW Space and Defense on satellite-related research for NASA, and I lost track of Russ over the years.

But I remember going to Russ’ house one spring day in 1989 for dinner while we were still working together.

I showed up at his house, and he was out barbecuing something; he had the TV on, and he had a whole stack of VCR tapes on the shelf. “What’s all this” I asked Russ idly. He laughed and said, “I’m not sure you’re ready for that.”

“What do you mean” I asked, and he started a multiple hour-long conversation about…UFOs. Those stacks of tapes were full of UFO stories. Including one by a guy named… Bob Lazar. Russ was a ferocious UFO afficionado.

Rusty was convinced Bob was telling the truth…because Russ himself had worked out at Area 51. He, too, had flown on the JANET flights. He had taken the same busses with blacked out windows after landing at Groom Lake. He had seen strange lights in the night sky that were NOT the aircraft they were working on.

Russ’s own direct experience convinced me that Lazar’s story was credible. And he sparked a lifelong interest in the “UFO” topic for me.

Russ passed away in July of 2023. I wish I had gotten back in touch with him sooner, to catch up and talk about things. He was a good friend and mentor.

Sharon, if you see this: I’m sorry for your loss. I miss you, “Rusty”. Thanks for waking me up.

And thank you, Bob Lazar: for having the courage to do what you did. Maybe 2026 will be the year it will all finally be disclosed.

So about those “Aliens”.

Let’s revisit my post about “disclosure” from last November (embedded at the bottom) because that topic—for whatever reason—is gaining a firmer foothold in the public consciousness lately.

From the video below, just released within the past few days—

Interviewer: “Look I know Donald Trump wants to disclose something…he hasn’t done it yet. But I think he wants to be the President to do that.”

Rep Tim Burchett: “If they would release the things I’ve seen, you’d be up at night thinking about this stuff. I was briefed 2 weeks ago. It would’ve set the Earth on— This country would’ve come unglued if they would’ve heard what I heard. They would demand answers.”

Against this backdrop, some facts:

(1) Lara Trump has said on TV interviews the President intends to speak about this topic;

(2) President Trump, in a Truth Social post, directed Pete Hegseth to release what the Pentagon has (why did Trump post it on “Truth” — isn’t that a strange place to give a directive to the Secretary of War?)

(3) The Secretary of War Pete Hegseth replied on X with an alien and “salute” emoji, and nothing else, screenshotting the post from Trump;

(4) Former President Obama recently said in an interview that “aliens were real” but they “weren’t at Area 51.” Why is this something he’s talking about right now? Listen to what Bob Lazar said about area 51 and S4 back in 1989;

(5) A few weeks ago, the Trump Administration registered the domain aliens.gov ;

(6) A movie about Bob Lazar and the S4 site is coming out in April (S4 is near to, but not the same as “Area 51” — Obama ought to know this—so is that why Trump warned him for saying something he shouldn’t have?);

(7) In June 2026, Spielberg is releasing a new movie:

So what’s going on here?

Lots of folks want to push one narrative or another about what all of this means or doesn’t mean (it’s a psyop, it’s a silly game, it’s a distraction from this that or the other thing, etc. etc.)

In my November post, recall that I wrote about Stephen Bassett—who in the lead up to the 2016 Presidential race, was certain that Hillary was going to be the “Disclosure President”. Watch the videos of him in the post I included below.

John Podesta’s emails on Wikileaks (see my substack post for more) have all sorts of interesting tidbits about the “UFO topic”. Why was this a focus of the Hillary campaign?

If we presume that there is “something” behind this desire for someone to be the so-called “disclosure President”—whatever that means, and whatever that fact might imply in terms of upending hidden power structures—it might make the eight-year attacks on Trump more understandable: if there really is something to all of this, it follows that there could be entrenched powers who absolutely do not want Trump to be the one to spill it all.

They either want to maintain secrecy because of the power that this topic gives them—or they want to reserve to themselves the “power to disclose”.

What lengths might the gatekeepers go to in order to prevail? Embroil Trump in RussiaGate and treasonous overthrow plots? Cheat in elections? Attempt to take him out at a Trump Rally? Perhaps. Or is it all really about nothing?

With stories like this, one must have razor sharp clarity. Here are all the possibilities:

(1) Both Gaetz and Burchett are psychotically delusional.

(2) Both are aware that they are knowingly deceiving us for some reason.

(3) Both believe they are correct and truthful, but they are being fed false information from the same network, to intentionally mislead them (and us.)

(3) (a) if this is a distraction, the next obvious questions are “From what” and “by whom” and “what’s their payoff”

(4) they are telling the truth as they know it, and are not being misled by covert actors; but the objective truth is something different;

(5) they are telling us something that is actually, objectively true.

Here’s my problem with @timburchett ‘s reply:

I don’t recall anywhere in the Constitution where it says that members of Congress have a duty to maintain fealty to the gatekeepers. “To not say anything about what they have been shown.” Quite to the contrary: House Members have a sworn duty to We, the People. You, Rep. Burchett, are elected to act in our best interests—not yours, and not the gatekeepers.

If the reasoning tree above eventually leads to #5, then members of Congress have a DUTY to inform the public what they know, classified gatekeeping be damned.

My right as a citizen and human to know the truth overrides the gatekeepers’ interests for keeping this knowledge secret.

So let’s talk about the North Pole.

I have been following the so-called “ECDO” hypothesis (Exothermic Core-Mantle Decoupling – Dzhanibekov Oscillation hypothesis) originated by Ethical Skeptic (TES) for some time now.

Recently, AI has allowed me to move from being merely curious to being an armchair geodesy data analyst as I study this topic from my own point of view.

This ECDO concept has also caused me to conceive of something relating to AI and robotics that I call the “Ark Hypothesis” - the idea that AI and robotics may have arrived just in time to help us prepare for, endure, and recover from a coming catastrophe.

At the beginning of May, I’ll be attending a session in the Colorado Springs area to hear Ben Davidson and Ethical Skeptic debate their individual theories about the general subject of “Earth’s Disaster Cycle”.

In essence, these related theories of catastrophism have to do with the motion of Earth’s physical poles—in particular, the claim that at times, the Earth’s asymmetrically-shaped solid core sometimes “detaches” from the mantle and crust, with the result that the crust “slips” relative to the denser and heavier core, swapping the current physical North Pole with another region (theorized to be a point in southern Africa that TES calls Np' - Np meaning North Pole and the prime symbol meaning “alternate position”) before moving back to its prior location after some period of time.

When the shift happens, it will likely result in massive floods, ferocious winds, and earthquakes during the event. The floods stories of the bible and other civilizations including ancient Sumer and China may find their origins here (great thanks to Craig Stone for this compilation.)

Einstein himself entertained the idea of “crust/core decoupling” and wrote the foreword to a famous book by Charles Hapgood on the subject: Earth’s Shifting Crust: A Key to Some Basic Problems of Earth Science (1958, Pantheon Books). It’s co-authored/collaborated with James H. Campbell.

To understand the mechanics of how and why this crust/core decoupling happens, you’d need to read and grasp the ECDO paper—with the warning that it is fairly dense work written far above an 8th grade reading level.

Have a few hours or days set aside, use Grok to help explain the more difficult parts to you, and have a few cups of coffee handy.

On X, there is a small group of interested researchers who discuss findings relating to this topic (Craig Stone aka @nobulart; Ethical Skeptic a.k.a. TES a.k.a. Roger Cunningham aka @ethicalSkeptic; @junhobtc; @zachariasPro; Tami Camarata, aka @kitsuneInVA and a few others.)

This group, inspired by TES, have been creating simulation models and studying the research papers for evidence that is scattered across geophysics, archaeology, geology, physics, history, and celestial mechanics relating to True Polar Wander.

Among these, I find Craig Stone’s work seeking to confirm or refute the ECDO hypothesis most striking and admirable—particularly this recent article.

The short story: there appears to be evidence that the physical north pole indeed experiences “True Polar Wander” (TPW) at some periodic interval over time. That interval could be at 6,000 or 12,000 year intervals, according to some estimates.

A similar but somewhat distinct theory is advanced by Ben Davidson (@SunWeatherMan on X). TES’s work finds particularly striking evidence that nearly 80 ancient monuments located across the globe were built to align with Np’ (that is, they were built to “face north” at a time when north meant a different spot on the globe than it does today.)

In addition to “True Polar Wander”—which has to do with the motion of the physical “point” that is the North Pole—there is also a geomagnetic component: the Earth’s magnetic north and south poles sometimes “wander” as well, at times exchanging places (magnetic north and south swapping positions on the globe.)

Since the year 2000, magnetic “North” has moved from about ~81°N, 110°W to ~86°N, 139°E, more than 1,000 miles away when measured on a great circle path.

Your average man on the street is totally unaware of this striking fact—though most pilots are—because navigation charts based on magnetic north have had to be updated frequently in recent years. Also aware are the Geese that fly overhead as they migrate northward to breed, using their internal compasses to guide their flight.

If you saw the Aurora Borealis over the past few years even in far southern latitudes like Florida—you too saw direct evidence of the Earth’s changing magnetic field. This is what we saw several times here in Michigan, something that we should have maybe seen a few times over a few decades, but instead saw three or four times since 2023:

The magnetic pole didn’t move in a straight line, but instead meandered this way and that, covering a much greater cumulative path length. The distance moved, and the recent speed of movement (34-55 km/year) is shocking.

While this sounds wild to the uninitiated, the fact is that our own Sun regularly flips its north and south magnetic poles every 11 years. There is copious evidence in things like sedimentary rock (which can sometimes contain iron in various formations) showing that the north magnetic pole of ferro-magnetic iron particles aligns with “physical north” in some layers of sediment but aligns with “physical south” in others.

Which means that “magnetic north” was not fixed and moved between the times that those layers were deposited.

This suggests that the Earth, too, experiences magnetic pole reversals, just like the Sun. Whether magnetic pole motion correlates with, precedes, or lags “True Polar Wander” is not yet known. But we’re starting to worry a bit.

As I have been following this topic, I had been reviewing charts produced by official scientific organizations like this one: Earth Orientation Center. I had taken an interest in viewing the “Polhody” chart (below), which charts the movement of the north pole on a daily basis.

Inspired by the work of @zachariasPro, who was suggesting that 2026 may already be showing early signs of “decoupling”, I wanted to see for myself the movement over the pole over a roughly six-month period.

I happened to choose Sep 3, 2025 as an arbitrary starting point. But it grew tiresome every day having to choose the chart options each time to keep that anchor point, and I wanted to see other details on the chart that I thought would be more helpful.

So last Sunday, at 5:00pm, I sat down at my home office desk and turned to Claude Opus 4.6, my trusted AI coding agent. I gave it the URL of the chart above to examine as a starting point, and then I give it instructions to improve the graphs according to my interests.

One of the things I was curious about was this: I knew that every day, the north pole moves a few inches this way and that, making a rough circle about 30-50 feet in diameter over the course of a year. But I wanted to see how much a given day’s movement was in comparison to other days, over time: I knew that sometimes it moved more, and sometimes less, and I wanted to see if there were any interesting patterns.

So, I gave the instructions to Claude, and in 30 minutes, my website was done. A task like this would have taken me and a few other programmers months to do in the recent past; but now, it took less than 30 minutes.

This direct link takes to you my version of the “polhody” chart shown below, which automatically anchors the start date at 9/3/2025 and advances each day, saving me time. I also used color to mark the months, and I added a ‘first day of the month’ marker for visual clarity.

What I found with these new charts was fascinating, particularly the one below —and it caught the interest of Craig Stone and others because of the clarity of what it showed.

Here’s what is cool about the new bar chart above that I commissioned Claude to create. Each vertical bar shows the extent of the “step” on a given day of March over the entire window selected (in this case, over 30 years from 1996 forward.) Some days, the pole moves 10x as far as it does on other days.

The red bars are the days of March in 2026; the faded bars to their left are how far the pole moved on that same day in prior years.

I added a marker to show the “percentile rank” of this year’s daily bars, relative to the others. “0%” means that 2026’s bar is the lowest in the entire 30-year window. The small arrow above the numbers also gives a rough indication of which “direction” the pole was moving from one day to the next.

There may be revisions to this data in the next month that might change these results, but for now they show something remarkable: several days in March of 2026 show the lowest step sizes in 30 years.

When I set the start point to 1976, I saw that several days in March of 2026 also have lower step sizes than even the previous 50 years. What makes my charts even better is that I can share a direct link that sets up the chart options exactly the way needed for you to reproduce my view.

Here’s the upshot:

The Earth appears to be doing something remarkably different in March of 2026 than is has since data collection started in 1962—and it has nothing to do with “climate change” or anything humans are responsible for. It has to do with something taking place in Earth’s core.

There is reason to believe that these changes in polar motion, magnetic pole position, and rotational dynamics might account for the unusual behavior of this winter’s polar vortex—which led to a brutally cold winter in some parts of the US.

Here’s another chart that fascinated me:

When Claude built the website for me, it just decided that I might want to click buttons to look at 1, 2, 5 and 10 year slices of time, as well as the whole data set; and Claude was right, I loved that feature. When I clicked “All” to see the whole data series, I noticed something remarkable.

There is a cycle to the distance the physical pole moves.

Every day, the pole moves a little or a lot, but there is (or at least, there was) a curious pattern to these movements; if you look from the left of the chart, over a period of roughly 6 to 7 years, the pole moved a lot (3-4 units of measure) during the “peaks” whereas in the minima, it moved only about 0.4 units of measure each day: 10 times less during the ‘quieter’ times.

Something strange also happened in the 1990’s (assuming those spikes weren’t instrument error.) But then notice what has happened since 2010: the peaks/valleys have smoothed out. There is less variation in movement. Studies suggest that the earth’s core has “slowed” in rotation, and perhaps even “reversed direction” since 2010.

I had read articles over the last few years making these claims, but now I have my own way of visualizing the effect of this transition. I can independently visualize something that supports the claims.

Before I leave this topic, I want to go back and emphasize something truly remarkable: with advanced AI like Claude, I can now create— in a matter of minutes— websites that do a better job of visualizing scientific data than the Universities and agencies own departments. By myself.

Just think about how AI is going to revolutionize the method of research and science: curiosity led me to ask questions, and AI helped satisfy that curiosity in ways never before possible. You, too, can become an armchair data analyst.

I’ve been using GitHub Copilot for AI-assisted programming for more than a year now; for the last 9 months or so, I’ve used Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 3.7 to do most of the work.

While the rest of the world argues with ChatGPT and gets annoyed with its confident sounding hallucinations, or fiddles with creating cool looking images...those of us that use AI for coding on a daily basis see an entirely different future taking place right in front of us.

In this domain...AI is dominant. Even the experts now say so; in fact, the team that is creating the software for “Claude Code” at Anthropic now uses Claude Code to write 100% of the new code for Claude.

Claude Code...is writing itself.

And man… it’s scary good.

Claude Sonnet 3.7, which I used for six months, was already impressively good, but at times I had to force it to redo work that it did poorly, or coach it with suggestions about how to solve certain problems that it got stuck on (”use this tool, look here for the data, write the code like this, use that as an example”)

Interestingly, it still did excellent work and interacted with me conversationally and jovially (as a junior programmer would have), while giving me compliments for my brilliant approaches to problem solutions at times. Sometimes even replying to me in Portuguese, for some reason.

One time, after a few hours of going round and round on a problem that it couldn’t solve, I got frustrated and wrote “fix the damn code!” which somehow made it choose an alternate approach that led to an eventual solution.

But while it was replying to me it said “OK, I fixed the DAMN CODE!” and I laughed at how human it sounded; it was just like a frustrated programmer dishing it back at me after I yelled at it.

But what I did over the past two days with its successor...was unbelievably better.

Coding is now dead as a profession; at least in the way it was understood up until about 2023. If traditional coding was analogous to hunting with clubs and arrows, modern coding is like hunting with laser-cannons mounted on a fleet of B2-stealth bombers all flying on autopilot.

When Claude Opus 4.5 arrived as an option in GitHub Copilot last month, I switched to using it—even though it costs more to use (it has a 3X multiplier vs. other models.)

I gave it a try anyway, and it was breathtaking. It is in an entirely different league than anything I’d used before. And I’m not the only one.

I’ve written many times about my experience with AI-assisted programming over the past 18 months; at one point I estimated that on some tasks AI gave me a 100X improvement in time to completion.

Two days ago, I asked GitHub copilot (using Claude Opus 4.5) to build a new tool for my colleague at work. The tool is like a web-based spreadsheet that pulls data from a variety of sources and lets the user quickly contact customers while creating a data-populated rich text email template.

Something like this would have taken me and my team about two weeks to build, in the past; it required a new front-end component for the web, new APIs to handle data operations, new interactivity with existing modules like my email component, and a new database model.

From the time I asked Claude to start work on the component until the time it was done was about 15 minutes. It actually took longer for me to describe in a text file what I wanted it to build than it took Claude Opus 4.5 to build it.

And it just worked.

I had to go through a few iterations afterward to add features that I hadn’t thought through well enough initially and add some functionality; this it did in mere minutes each time. In other cases, it anticipated what the tool should have done, and it just designed the tool to do that without me even asking. It made smart choices.

It also understands the business side of what the tool is built for (a property management company) and it understands the accounting and analytics processes relevant to that kind of business.

Today, my colleague started using the new tool to do an annual process that used to take her the better part of a week to accomplish; with my new tool, she got it done in a few hours.

But here’s the crazy part.

While she’s using the new tool (working from home) I’m watching the same new component on my screen; I designed it to auto-update as she makes changes on her side (no page refresh required), so I can follow along with her.

As I examined her work, I saw opportunities to make the tool even better and make it easier still to use; I added some more automated data lookups into the email templates she was using, even changing the content of the email body dynamically based on which options she chose.

So, while she’s actively working with the tool to complete her annual task, I’m improving it in parallel, in real time. Then I told her: “Hey, take a lunch break; when you’re back, these new features will be live on the production system.”

Before she left for lunch, I went over the changes I had just made in my development environment to get any last-minute feedback from her; and while both of us were at lunch, I had the AI check in the code and publish it to production.

That sort of thing wasn’t even conceivable a few years ago, when I did web-app development with a small team. I built a functioning tool now in hours instead of weeks.

I also made meaningful user-experience improvements in real time, tested them and pushed them to a multi-server load balanced Linux production system, all as I watched my colleague use the tool.

There has never been a time like this in my career (and I used to build supercomputers, back in the day.)

Because I gave Claude Opus 4.5 agent access to my database as I’ve been developing code with it, I was even able to ask it to do data analysis for me; things that I would have been tasked to do, like “find me the payment history for this client, and look for missing payments and patterns.”

I literally asked the Agent to do this in English, without telling it what tables or code to use. I just gave it a name: “find me the payment history for John Smith from the electronic payment system and also from the internal ledger” and it knew enough about the structure of my system to just figure out how to get the answer.

Then it gave me a nicely formatted table showing me the analysis. Next I said: “cool...but can you convert that to a PDF?” and in seconds, it did.

Then I said “this is great. Can you turn that process you just went through for John Smith into a new command line tool that I can run at any time, just by giving you an arbitrary customer name or address?” And viola: now I have a script that I can use to generate a PDF with an analyzed payment history just by asking for a client’s name.

These AI tools are now like having a few software PhDs teamed up with an expert accountant and a data analyst all in one.

Like Inigo Montoya in the Princess Bride, I now have to say “I admit it. You are better than me.”

But I don’t get to say: “I have a secret though; I’m not left-handed, either.”

The AI can beat me with either hand, now. Easily.

Not only can it code much better and faster than I can; it can now also do the data analytics that I would routinely do using the tool that I built to help me do that analysis—but it can get the result ten or twenty or a hundred times faster.

This year I will extend the business application to allow voice-controlled agent access, so that office users can just say something like “give me the payment history for Jack Smith” without even opening the web app or searching or typing anything.

And then...I don’t know what I’ll do next. Seriously don’t know.

When I went spelunking one day doing research on Bassett, I fell into a deep rabbit hole while reading through some of the Podesta Emails that were posted online by Wikileaks in October of 2016.

Recall that this “leak” occurred just prior to the 2016 election; and also note that it was John Podesta who came on stage late on election night to “concede” on behalf of Hillary, who was somehow unavailable.

One must wonder whether Assange’s’ entanglement with the “Intelligence community” and his imprisonment in England has something to do with all of this, too.

One doesn’t need to have yet reached a conclusion on this UFO topic to still find interest in observing and integrating the flow of “information” (in quotes for a reason) about the UFO/UAP topic.

Whatever this phenomenon is (hidden reality, conspiracy theory, or a massive PsyOp), given this year’s focus on UAPs on Congress, it indicates there is something of interest brewing here, though it isn’t clear yet exactly what.

This “disclosure President” topic has a longer history than most people realize.

Stephen Bassett is the guy who was sure that Hillary would be the UFO “disclosure” president. As far back as mid 2016, before the election, he was on the talk circuit saying that he was convinced that “alien disclosure” was imminent, and that Hillary would be the “disclosure President.” He famously said that statues would be erected in Hillary’s honor as a result of this.

Bassett was absolutely dumbfounded when Hillary lost in 2016. I watched an interview of him in early 2017 when he was completely at loss for words. The “Field of Vision” video below is a good summary of his position and takes. Perhaps there was a lot more about the 2016 election that has not yet surfaced.

I don’t know what to make of Bassett’s claims, however if you hypothesize that there is something to this “hidden knowledge” claim regarding UFO/Aliens/Advanced tech, it does seem to fit with certain facts sets ranging from the JFK assassination to Nixon Impeachment to the “get Trump” phenomenon, as researched by the Dark Journalist here and here on his shows.

But this last part is where it really gets interesting. This talk of Hillary and “disclosure” can also be linked to the Podesta UFO emails. If you like rabbit holes…this is one you can do dig into yourself, for hours.

Recall that Julian Assange, via WikiLeaks, released a trove of emails retrieved from John Podesta’s email account, which was protected by a ridiculously insecure password, according to accounts at the time.

In this particular search on WikiLeaks - The Podesta Emails, you’ll find emails from Blink 182 musician and later “To the Stars Academy” front man Tom Delonge. How did Delonge come to be connected to all of this?

Among those emails, you’ll find the entire PDF for Tom Delonge’s book “Sekret Machines”, a “fiction” novel about alien UFOs, Operation Paperclip, and Area 51; and also a mention about General McCasland (see below.)

I read that entire novel a few years ago, after downloading it from Wikileaks; Tom went on to write a few more installments. What motivated Tom to write that series?

You’ll also find emails in the Podesta emails UFO query about Judge Emmet Sullivan in reference to his involvement on the Kecksberg PA UFO incident. Most curious…

Judge Sullivan just so happens to be the judge who gained notoriety in 2020 because of his decisions about General Flynn in the lawfare trials against Flynn claiming he lied about communications with the Russian Ambassador during Trumps 2016 transition.

Flynn’s case was later dismissed as moot following a presidential pardon; that time in history is captured in Flynn’s own movie.

Anyhow… on to the deeper cosmology subject, now that you’ve had a cat fix!

I found something very interesting about the dilemma described in the below video that I recently came across.

It appears to be one of those “juicy” discrepancies that can overturn big swathes of accepted scientific dogma.

In short, this video describes a fundamental disagreement between the Cosmic Microwave Background’s (CMB) inferred velocity vector of our solar system, versus the velocity vector inferred from analyzing the anisotropy of distant quasar light.

In simpler terms: there are two (apparently robust) methods for detecting in which direction our solar system or galaxy is moving relative to the Universe as a whole, and they disagree about that direction of motion by almost 90 degrees.

They can’t both be right, and if either is wrong, the foundations of the Standard Model of Cosmology are in question.

To put it simply: these two distinct methods rely on different kinds of “anistropic” measurements.

Each of these methods detects very slight differences in some measured property that appears to depend on the direction in which you are looking out into the Universe (thus, the “anistropy”.)

When one sees slight blue-shifted light when looking in one direction, for example, and slightly redshifted light when looking in the opposite direction, astronomers use the term “dipole” to describe this condition (“two-poles”, like for instance on a bar magnet.)

This anisotropy is puzzling first of all because the standard approaches for understanding the evolution of the Universe after the Big Bang postulate that (at a large enough scale, anyway) the Universe should be almost completely isotropic: that is, it should look essentially the same (“uniform” and “smooth”) no matter in which direction you look.

But this isn’t the case. Instead, we see “lumpiness” and non-uniformity that is direction dependent.

CMB and distant Quasars can both be used to determine “which way we are moving” (the direction in which our galaxy as a whole is moving) relative to the rest of the Universe by determining the directions of the “dipole”: that is, the direction which looks more blue means that direction is moving toward us, whereas and the one that looks more red means that direction is moving away from us.

These two conflicting methods say that the solar system is moving in two different directions that are at right angles to each other!

We are facing a classic “science overturning” kind of dilemma here. Here are two “facts”—each with seemingly impeccable backing—which are in major disagreement.

Both methods can’t be right, yet neither looks to be falsifiable based on current understanding.

Yet modifying the assumptions for either one to account for the discrepancy calls into question the “Big Bang” hypothesis model.

From the transcript:

“… the sharpest contradiction yet has just come from a study of over a million quasars. Like the CMB, quasars show a dipole — a kind of universal offset in redshift that can be read as our motion through the universe. But the direction doesn’t match. It’s almost exactly 90 degrees away from the CMB ...”

To me, this dilemma is just like the “Hubble tension” dilemma that is used to describe the two incompatible calculations of the H₀ constant.

The Hubble tension refers to a significant discrepancy in measurements of the Hubble constant (H₀), which quantifies the current expansion rate of the universe.

It is now believed that the Universe is not only expanding but doing so at an ever-increasing rate; the problem is that the two methods for calculating this rate of expansion disagree, and the “error bars” of each technique are not large enough to accommodate the other method.

So which one is right?

In this CMB/Quasar dilemma there are again two “facts” regarding the direction of the velocity vector, and it seems unlikely (to the scientists studying each one) that measurement error accounts for either result—yet the two methods for inferring direction are orthogonal.

This tells me that the dogmatists are (delightfully) facing an uncomfortable paradigm shift—which I would hope would open the door to alternative cosmologies like Randell Mills’ theories of cosmology.

The JWST data also seems to be finding evidence incompatible with dogma that is a better fit to Mills' model, e.g. the Capotauro object with possible z=32 redshift.

“The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is the thermal radiation left over from the Big Bang, appearing as a nearly uniform blackbody spectrum with an average temperature of about 2.725 K across the sky.

The CMB dipole refers to the largest observed anisotropy in this radiation—a slight temperature variation that follows a dipole (cosine) pattern, with one side of the sky appearing slightly hotter and the other slightly cooler by roughly one part in 1,000.

This dipole is primarily caused by the Doppler effect from the motion of our Solar System relative to the CMB rest frame. Essentially, the Earth (and the entire Local Group of galaxies) is moving through the cosmic “soup” of CMB photons, boosting their temperature in the direction of motion and reducing it in the opposite direction.

The broader Local Group motion is faster, at about 620 ± 15 km/s toward galactic coordinates ℓ = 271.9° ± 2°, b = 30° ± 3°. The dipole’s amplitude is approximately 3.3621 ± 0.0010 mK. There’s also a smaller, time-varying component due to Earth’s orbit around the Sun, which modulates the dipole over a year.

Once the dipole is subtracted from CMB maps (a process used to calibrate instruments like those on the Planck satellite), the remaining temperature fluctuations are much smaller, on the order of 100 μK root mean square, revealing finer-scale anisotropies that provide insights into the early universe’s structure.

Recent studies have highlighted potential tensions with the CMB dipole when compared to dipoles inferred from other cosmic tracers, such as radio galaxy surveys, quasar distributions, or number counts of extragalactic sources.

For instance, analyses of large radio surveys show dipole amplitudes that are 2–3 times larger than expected from the CMB-derived kinematic prediction, with directions sometimes offset by tens of degrees.

This discrepancy could challenge the cosmological principle (the assumption that the universe is homogeneous and isotropic on large scales) or point to systematic effects in the data. Ongoing missions like Euclid are probing this further by measuring dipoles in the cosmic infrared background for comparison.

While the standard interpretation holds, these findings suggest the need for deeper investigations into possible new physics or observational biases.”

I also recently came across this curious anomaly, for which there is also no good conventional explanation: The “Disappearing Dust” star:

TYC 8241 2652 1, often referred to as the “disappearing dust star,” is a young, Sun-like star located approximately 450 light-years away in the constellation Centaurus within our Milky Way galaxy.

This star gained significant attention due to a remarkable astronomical phenomenon: its surrounding dust disk, which had been prominently visible for decades, virtually vanished in a span of about two years, between 2008 and 2010.

And finally, this: a new Supermassive Black Hole. The problem with some of these recent black holes that the James Webb Telescope is finding is that they are too old.

Current theory holds that black holes which are that massive were formed by gobbling up stars and galaxies; but those stars and galaxies were only just beginning to be formed themselves, when the black hole was already believed to have formed!

What then, did it “eat” to grow that big, that long ago? It’s like visiting a newborn room in a hospital, only to find a 300lb old man sitting in one of the cribs and burping.

The black hole you’re referring to is the supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the center of the galaxy SDSS J1148+1930, which serves as the foreground lensing galaxy in the gravitational lens system known as the Cosmic Horseshoe (also cataloged as SDSS J114816.64+193028.3 or LRG 3-757). It doesn’t have a unique proper name beyond its association with this system, but it’s often called the “Cosmic Horseshoe black hole” in recent reports.

This SMBH’s extraordinary mass was measured and announced in August 2025, based on a reanalysis of existing data from the Hubble Space Telescope and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The Cosmic Horseshoe itself was first identified in 2007 as a striking example of strong gravitational lensing, where the foreground galaxy’s gravity bends light from a more distant background galaxy (at redshift z=2.38) into a nearly complete Einstein ring resembling a horseshoe shape.

The 2025 study used a novel method leveraging the lensing distortion itself—combined with stellar dynamics and gas kinematics—to directly infer the black hole’s mass, marking one of the most precise measurements for such a distant object.

Key Properties

- **Mass**: Approximately 36 billion solar masses (M☉), with estimates ranging from 32 to 40 billion M☉ accounting for uncertainties in the models. This makes it one of the most massive black holes ever detected, rivaling or approaching the upper echelons of known ultra massive black holes.

- **Location and Distance**: The black hole resides at the core of SDSS J1148+1930, an elliptical galaxy in the constellation Leo, at coordinates RA 11h48m16.64s, Dec +19°30’28.3”. The system is about 5 billion light-years from Earth (redshift z≈0.444), meaning we’re seeing it as it was when the universe was roughly 8.8 billion years old.

- **Size and Structure**: As an ultra-massive SMBH, its event horizon would span billions of kilometers—comparable to the diameter of our solar system—but it’s embedded in a quiescent, gas-poor galaxy dominated by intergalactic medium, with no active accretion disk or quasar activity detected. The host galaxy has a stellar mass of around 300 billion M☉, giving the black hole an unusually high mass fraction (about 10-12% of the galaxy’s total mass).

Why It’s Unusual

Most SMBHs grow in tandem with their host galaxies through mergers and accretion over cosmic time, typically capping at a few billion solar masses in the local universe. This one, however, is exceptionally massive for its environment—a relatively isolated, evolved elliptical galaxy in a group setting rather than a dense cluster.

Its mass was inferred from the precise modeling of the Einstein ring’s asymmetry and the velocity dispersion of stars in the central region, revealing a “fossil” black hole that may have grown rapidly in the past but is now dormant. Compared to others:

- It’s larger than the SMBH in M87 (6.5 billion M☉) or Sgr A* (4 million M☉) by orders of magnitude.<br>

- It approaches or exceeds estimates for TON 618 (around 40-66 billion M☉, depending on measurements) and Phoenix A (100 billion M☉, though contested).

Implications for Cosmology

This discovery pushes the boundaries of black hole mass limits, suggesting an upper theoretical cap around 50-100 billion M☉ due to feedback mechanisms like radiation pressure halting further growth. It challenges models of SMBH-galaxy co-evolution, as such a heavyweight in a “normal” galaxy implies either extreme early mergers or efficient accretion in the universe’s first few billion years.

The lensing-based measurement technique could reveal more hidden ultramassive black holes, refining our understanding of how they influence galaxy formation and the role of dark matter halos in seeding them. If confirmed as near the mass ceiling, it supports ideas that black holes can’t grow indefinitely, potentially resolving tensions in hierarchical merger scenarios.

Future observations with telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) or the Extremely Large Telescope could provide spectroscopic confirmation and hunt for similar systems, potentially upending estimates of the cosmic black hole mass function.

To sum things up:

We are in an exciting new era, thanks to the James Webb Telescope and other advances in science and technology.

It is beginning to feel like we are on the cusp of a completely new revolution, similar to how things were in the late 1800’s just before Einstein blew the doors off of physics.

The fluidity of motion in this robot is so smooth that it is beginning to close the uncanny valley gap—some people even doubted that it was real, and not just a person in a suit, until the fabric was peeled back to show them that it was a robot.

It has a synthetic ‘fascia’ to cover its metal skeleton, giving it a smoother body shape and skin like appearance than previous robots.

But the gait…wow, how amazing.

Robotics will continue to follow the same exponential trajectory that AI has been on since the fall of 2022; it’s just starting from a few-years later take-off point than AI. Improvements are now happening at an inconceivable pace.

Humanoid robotics holds the potential of significantly improving life for billions.

Consider just this one example (more will follow): what if every elderly person had a tireless, positive and supportive personal assistant to help them stand, walk, and do basic tasks at home—to help keep them out of assisted living or nursing home facilities for as long as possible?

What if there was a 24-hour assistant to walk behind the infirm and offer elbow support to steady their gait, hold their hand when needed, and see what their own limited vision and blindness might make them miss?

What if that same robot could also drive them to the store, take them to doctor’s appointments, walk the dogs, shovel snow, cook them meals, and escort them to social events?

Not to mention be a watchful and friendly companion to elderly people who might otherwise decline cognitively and emotionally due to lack of interaction and stimulation—because they no longer have friends or family networks as they did when they were younger.

Even just this singular use case gives me personal hope for a brighter future. I don’t want to be a burden on my own family when I age; I see a world coming where I won’t have to be.

Consider, too, that the grandfather of the Singularity concept and an early pioneer of neural networking that led us toward AI — Ray Kurzweil — recently said that he believes humanity may reach longevity escape velocity in the next four years.

This is the idea that—because of medical breakthroughs coming as a result of AI—longevity would start to increase at a rate greater than one year of life extension for every calendar year that elapses; essentially reversing aging and ending death from it. We could all become Benjamin Buttons.

Meanwhile, over at Telsa, Elon Musk’s new CEO pay package was approved. If he succeeds in getting Tesla to reach the agreed to milestones, Musk will become a trillionaire. If he achieves those objectives, it is deserved.

One of the key pillars in his strategy is to bring the Optimus robot to market in a big way.

His vision: Robotics will eliminate poverty and potentially lead to a post-monetary world, where energy (and perhaps “cognition” in the form of AI)—instead of fiat currency—constitutes “money”.

”Tesla’s $20,000 humanoid robot isn’t coming. It’s here. Production lines running. Right now. And Elon just said the quiet part so loud it should’ve stopped the world: “Optimus will actually eliminate poverty.

Optimus will actually give people incredible medical care. Optimus will ultimately be better than the best human surgeon with a level of precision that isn’t possible, that is beyond human.”

Then he dropped this: “Optimus is kind of like an infinite money glitch. Maybe there won’t even be money in the future but might be measured in terms of wattage.” Read that again. The richest legend alive just told you money becomes obsolete and your job disappears in the same breath.

Update 11/14/25: Consider this: Here’s Elon saying that Optimus will be able to do surgery as good or better than the best surgeon…on anyone, anywhere.

I think this is why Musk has eased back on the DOGE cuts path that he was so fired up about. He knows that only so much corruption can be cut, only so much cost cutting can be achieved with the powers that be on both sides of the aisle.

But if he achieves the vision that he has for AI and robotics, the resultant economic boom will do much, much more to ease the debt burden than any number of additional cuts could.

While some people are fearful that “AI will take my job”, another viewpoint is that AI will make working voluntarily optional—you can work if you want to, but to survive and thrive, you won’t need to. AI and robotics will lead us to a “post scarcity” world of abundance for everyone.

This future does require some form of Universal Basic Income, an idea which I strongly resisted in the era before humanoid robotics; but we essentially already have that for huge swaths of the population, anyway. It’s called welfare.

The problem I have with the current socialist systems throughout the world is that to fund them, other people have to work much harder just to meet their own family’s needs as well as to cover the needs of others, as their wealth is forcibly extracted and wages withheld involuntarily from their labor either through visible means (taxes) or through devious invisible means (monetary inflation).

But with AI and robotics doing the future labor, the “human slavery” problem would fade away. The burden of providing for UBI would not have to lead to socialist slavery (one group living on the backs of labor of another group.)

Let’s now consider how IQ and SNAP benefits fit into this whole picture.

Jordan Peterson gave a talk in San Francisco seven years ago that I attended with my younger daughter. In this talk, he said this about the US Army and IQ:

The gist is that the U.S. Army, over many decades, has determined—after trying very, very hard to find ways around this obstacle—that there is an IQ threshold of 83, below which they simply can’t train potential recruits for any meaningful job in the Army.

Given that some of the work in the Army is simply peeling potatoes in the mess hall for dinner, that’s a worrisome statistic. Jordan has reiterated this “useful work” floor relative to IQ several times in the years since, and these ideas are backed up by extensive research in Psychology.

So, what does it mean to US society that there is potentially an IQ threshold of 83 below which most people will be unable to do essentially any useful work and hold jobs?

In a population of 330 million, it means that 10-12% of the population — as many as 40 million people — fall below the IQ threshold and are effectively unemployable. Not because they don’t want to work, but because they aren’t trainable.

This is a harsh fact that we can’t just walk past.

This fact is the reason that we have so many people on EBT and SNAP welfare programs, among others—aside from the fact that millions subsisting on these programs are also illegal immigrants (and some of those also happen to fall below the same IQ threshold, too.)

Sure, there are also people attached to the teat of the State who are fit and capable of work who choose not to work out of sloth and laziness or a love for Xbox and Communism; but a sizeable fraction of people on these programs are there simply because they fall below this 83 IQ threshold.

The reflexive “get a job!” retort that many Republicans often lean on is entirely valid for those lazy, work-the-system, TikTok ne'er-do-wells who post videos about their abusing the welfare systems—but it doesn’t really hold for a vast majority of the rest. Those people don’t tend to post on TikTok.

The problem of low cognitive ability is not so simple to solve.

Imagine, though, a world in which every one of these people instead has a humanoid robotic companion (or two) with an IQ of 300 that not only helps takes care of their needs but also acts as a sort of “guardian angel” at the same time. The guardian that they needed but never had from their own parents.

Are there dystopic ways to view this? Of course, there are: Hollywood, YouTube, and the media have polluted your thinking for years about all of those possibilities. But is that really what lies ahead? I think not.

Many of the dispossessed in society also come from broken homes and suffer from addictions, compounding their misery further.

What if those people have a safe, comfortable place to live, plenty of food to eat, things to entertain and inspire them, but also a beneficent, patient, calm and watchful companion helping them to avoid being scammed or making poor decisions that would have led them to a life of greater misery and destitution as it does in our current world? Cooking healthy food for them that they couldn’t do for themselves, instead of buying junk fast food because that’s all they know how to do?

And what if providing these things for the dispossessed also did not pose a burden on the rest of us through the socialist slavery trap?

This is the potential promise of AI and humanoid robotics: a possible future with greater compassion and higher standard of living for those who are incapable of providing for themselves—without enslaving the rest of us to accomplish that.

Now also consider my “AI as Ark” hypothesis.

This is the idea that there are potential cataclysms looming just over the horizon that are caused either by the Sun or via the ECDO hypothesis.

There are three ways to view these cataclysms:

1. Assume they’re wrong, and ignore them

2. Accept as possible, but not likely near term

3. Accept as likely, and that we may experience them

Did God intend for us to be prepared for such disasters? Did he instill creativity and intellect in us? The evidence abounds that we have a talent for building things, including AI, so that we would help ourselves survive. This is the heart of the Ark idea.

Or are these threats an ‘end times’ scenario that we aren’t meant to survive? If we are meant to survive, it is inescapable to me that AI and robotics can help us prepare for, endure, and recover from these looming events.

The question is: will we be able to reach the level of sustainable AI and robotics in time, while also protecting what is necessary to restart from a disaster in a kind of Svalbard Seed Vault for AI?

Or will society—via leftist control freaks and mal-informed and malign governments hamstring our efforts—making it too little, too late?

The race to the Golden Age is on.

Which, in point of fact, describes lots of politicians, too, I guess. We hold AIs to a higher standard than we do people, which I find intriguing.

While this hallucination problem has been there since the early days of ChatGPT-3 and has gotten slightly less troublesome over time, it has at the same time been persistent and has become more noticeable—particularly as the use of chat tools hits the mainstream and billions of eyes are now looking at what the models say.

This phenomenon happens often on X, for example, when Grok answers confidently back to someone’s post—and millions of people see a questionable answer or outright falsehood.

While other chatAIs besides Grok also hallucinate, they do so in one-on-one interactions, rather than in an open, public forum—so it isn’t as easy to spot.

For a long time, hallucination (both the AI kind, and the human kind!) has been a vexing problem, because it wasn’t clear what exactly was causing it—well, besides being trained on data sources like Reddit, the sewer of the Internet.

Not knowing its cause made it difficult to figure out what to do to try to fix it.

On the one hand, the same behavior that causes “hallucination” is—in a way—also what gives image, video and audio creation AIs (so-called generative AIs) the ability to create “innovative” output (i.e., a degree of randomness.)

This too, has some interesting parallels with humanity.

But in text chat scenarios, you don’t want randomness, nor hallucination: you want facts and truth. Sometimes AIs will “bluff” by giving you links to resources that you asked for that don’t actually work. Why? because in reality, the model couldn’t find what you were asking it to find, so they output something that you know, looks sorta like cool, relevant links—because they were trained to give you what you asked for.

At times, they may also sycophantically tell you “Oh, that’s a brilliant idea you just came up with!” when in fact, you’re way off in the weeds.

Or the AI will argue, quite emphatically, that some fact they’ve given you is impeccably true (when it’s obvious to you that it’s not.) I’ve watched Grok 3 do this, while Grok 4 is getting better at not doing it, daily. I find that fascinating, too: it is learning to be more truthful every day, by interacting with people on X.

This kind of “bluff” behavior tends to NOT happen when you’re interacting with an AI to do programming, for example (which I do, daily) or when you use it for problems involving math or hard sciences; in these domains, the “answer is known” during training or learning, so the Reinforcement Learning rewards are clear and concise.

With software, the code that the AI generates either works, or it doesn’t; the math problem that it works on either gets the right number or solution, or it doesn’t.

But in other domains in which Reinforcement Learning is not so easily applied, AI models tend to stumble.

However, hallucination may now be a solvable problem - pretraining and post training of the models just needs to change the reward function for saying “I don’t know.” It really could be that simple.

OpenAI just wrote a paper about this.

Saying “I don’t know” is a form of humility—Christians will recognize the power of humility, and its ability to lead one toward truth.

I find it appealing, comforting, and fascinating that this may lead us away from hallucinogenic AIs.

When we were young, we were taught to answer multiple choice questions the wrong way. And this, surprisingly, may be the cause of AI hallucination.

Why do I say we were taught wrong?

Your teacher told you: “don’t leave any questions blank. If you know the answer, circle it; if you don’t know the answer, make your best guess—because then, you have at least some chances of guessing right. It’s better than leaving the answer blank and getting a zero.”

It turns out that this may be why AI models hallucinate, because in a sense, the way we’ve been training AI models is analogous. What does all this mean?

If you value a wrong answer more highly than an honest “I don’t know”, you are going to get … a wrong answer, instead of truth, whenever an AI model (or a human being) has a low confidence or certainty of what the correct answer should be, but has been told “any answer is better than no answer.”

From your own schooling it was drilled into you that a guess is better than leaving the question blank: so, would you rather get a zero on that test, young man or young lady?

But what if the teacher instead told you: “There are four choices with possible answers, but also a fifth one: I don’t know. The right answer is worth 100%, a guess is 25%, I don’t know counts for 30% and leaving it blank counts for zero.”

Truth—honesty— therefore becomes more valued than it was before. Think about how that would improve teaching in schools (teaching kids to value truth over guessing.)

Would you rather have the truth, or a confident bluff? Why, exactly, do we teach kids to bluff? I know I wrote a few essays in high school where I had no idea what the lesson was about, but I boldly turned in something that sure looked plausible.

But as a wise adult, I would now rather have the humble truth. Especially from AIs, as they begin to reshape society.

If we can also find a way to instill a “moral framework” in AI models (please read that linked piece, if you haven’t yet!) in place of a patchwork of a bazillion “safety framework rules”, we may finally achieve a trustworthy, responsible form of AI—one that will lead us to the Golden Age of humanity.

Postscript: In the last week, I’ve had some amazing experiences with AI during my continued daily work using it on programming—stories which I hope to write about here, soon.

I have recently been left slack jawed and dumbfounded after seeing how it has rapidly improved in terms of genuinely skillful problem solving, even while being a playful co-worker with a sense of humor. Over on X last week, I wrote a post about being “Rick Rolled” by an AI!

I never imagined this would happen, five years ago: yet here we are.

The future looks bright.

These types diddle with ChatGPT asking it trivia questions and arguing with it on various soft subjects—wherein the opinions, ideologies and the narratives of those who curate the AIs training databases help to decide its current "knowledge"—instead of tasking AI to do real work in fields it excels at.

Sometimes these armchair experts are consumed by their own arrogance, instead of viewing things with humility and clarity.

To all I say: Pay attention. AI is gaining fast, and its current weaknesses will be addressed.

Recently, in the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), two large language model (LLM)-based AI systems achieved gold medal-level performance by scoring 35 out of 42 possible points each, solving five out of six math problems perfectly but earning zero points on the notably difficult Problem 6. This score would have placed them among the top human contestants, as 45 participants also scored exactly 35 points.

There are a handful of people out of 8 billion on this planet who are capable of that level of performance. This year, humans are still dominant in this field; next year, perhaps not. Ever again.

Here's an example problem:

A line in the plane is called sunny if it is not parallel to any of the x-axis, the y-axis, and the line x + y = 0. Let n ⩾ 3 be a given integer.

Determine all nonnegative integers k such that there exist n distinct lines in the plane satisfying both of the following:|

• for all positive integers a and b with a + b ⩽ n + 1, the point (a, b) is on at least one of the lines; and

• exactly k of the n lines are sunny.

Can you do math at that level, armchair AI expert? I can't (anymore.)

Below is a brief summary of my background in engineering, and through that, how I've come to have the perspective that I do with LLMs in software.

I started writing software more than 40 years ago.

In high school, I wrote code in BASIC and x86 assembly language before the "IBM PC" was even a thing. In high school, I wrote "machine language" to compute the digits of Pi out to thousands of decimal places.

In college, I learned FORTRAN for engineering, and I wrote a real-time graphical data display application in Turbo Pascal for an automotive parts manufacturer's transmission-case molding machine.

I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering and also studied Physics and Optics from one of the nation's top undergraduate colleges.

After I graduated, I went to work for TRW Space and Defense, becoming a hardware designer working on Earth Observing Satellite platforms for NASA contracts; I wrote code in UNIX shell script and in Perl to run diagnostics on the hardware I built.

After that, I joined a supercomputing startup in the early 90's, where our small team of Caltech wizards designed massively parallel processing systems that had thousands of cores.

Our machines were the fastest supercomputers on Earth for a time back in 1995-1997, and one series of them — the GeneMatcher II — helped sequence the DNA for the first whole Human Genome back in 2000 (Celera Genomics/Craig Venter.)

One of my colleagues from back then went on to eventually work at NVIDIA, building inference engine GPUs for self-driving cars (Tesla.) Nvidia is now the global supplier of the most advanced AI chips used by xAi, Tesla, Open AI, Anthropic, and more.

I wrote software back in the late 2000's for data analytics (SQL data warehouse applications, for those familiar) and eventually got into creating web applications using my knowledge of the "full stack" and leveraging my problem solving skills as a top tier engineer.

For a while I had a small team of 4-6 programmers working in a small software startup company; we built enterprise web applications for large HR departments and school districts.

Back then, one of the larger projects that we took on required about 4-6 programmers and it took about 18 months to develop. I had a people who specialized in "front end" design (web page construction and graphic design); I had others who specialized in "middleware" or "backend" software written in Visual C++, that fetched data from a database and did processing for various business logic needs; and others who specialized in database administration and server deployment.

In 2024, I designed and created a new business application for a property management company to streamline operations, using my own full-stack skills now augmented by AI.

I used ChatGPT in cut-and-paste mode at first to help with small bits of code; then I switched to an extension for Visual Code that let me highlight sections of code to cleanup, write from scratch, or ask questions about using the AI directly in my editor.

About six months ago I started using GitHub Copilot in Agent mode, in which the AI now takes control of the files and tools in my software editor environment, and automates almost all of the process of writing and testing software.

The agent now writes and modifies the code, and even writes scripts to deploy code to Linux-based production servers. By itself. I now design and direct, rather than sling code. I'm more of an architect, letting the AI cut the wood and hammer the nails.

With AI—which has evolved in skill over the last 18 months from being the equivalent of a smart teenager who wants to code someday professionally to a team of masters/PhD level experts in software engineering—I can do today, by myself, projects that use to take 4-6 people 18 months working together (or about 108 man months) in less than 6 months—all by myself.

Every few weeks lately, the pace of productivity doubles again, as the tools become more capable and make fewer and fewer errors. The AI agent I use now has direct access to inspect and modify my SQL database tables, so it can diagnose query issues all by itself, and fix bugs on its own.

It writes solid, production ready code better and faster than any junior or even seasoned programmer I've ever hired.

At my current age, I should be 'retired' from software; but instead, I am creating software at a pace and level of quality that exceeds the best I could have done back in my 20's and 30's.

AI has revivified me; re-ignited my creative spark by removing technical obstacles that used to stall my progress for days, weeks, sometimes months.

On top of that, I bought a used 2018 Tesla model 3 a year ago, and I commute back and forth to work using Tesla's Full Self Driving (FSD) package.

An AI drives me to work and back.

I share all of this to say: when someone who didn't even know what AI was until 2022, and didn't start using ChatGPT or Grok until late 2024 or 2025, and still doesn't understand how it works and what its current limitations are...that someone should rethink whether it's wise to try to tell me what AI can or cannot do, or that “it’s all a grift”.

Telling me that I didn't actually experience what I did, and didn't see what I personally saw and don’t do what I personally do each day is the ultimate in rhetorical failure.

It hits the same as when a flat-Earth proponent tries to tell me that the images that I saw come off of the NASA and GOES satellites myself (having built the hardware to receive the signals directly from space, and rasterize those images) didn't really show the Earth was round; no, you see—those images were all fake, and I was "misled" by "them" —they who were somehow magically altering the images in real-time so that I would mistakenly see a round Earth instead of a flat one.

That dog doesn't hunt with me.

The facts: I use AI every day on the particular use case that it is currently the best suited for (software development) and I can tell you, categorically: it has already changed the entire world. Irreversibly so.

That change accelerates every day, and most people have NO IDEA where this technology will take us in the coming years. The software industry as it used to be is already a dead man walking, and most haven't woken up to this reality yet.

But still, there are "armchair experts" who like to pontificate about AI without any of the experience in using it as I have.

Pay attention. We (well, you) are underestimating AI.

One must wonder why else, after you read this backstory.

According to the YouTube page stats, that Rusty Shackleford channel was created on April 9, 2018. The earliest video on that channel appeared in July of 2019, so it appears to have been idle for more than a year before it was first used, or else the other content there was deleted.

The last video in the cluster following July 2019 was uploaded in September of 2019 before it went silent for almost two years. Snapshots of the page showing at least some of the video thumbnails can still be found on the wayback machine here.

There were 65 videos in total uploaded to Rusty’s channel between July and September 2019. All of them were high resolution Drone videos of Epstein's Little St. James Island. I wrote another post about this a few years ago.

Several of the videos actually showed FBI and NYPD investigators inside Epstein's house collecting evidence—and then covering up the windows when they noticed they were being watched.

In September 2019, after posting the 65th Epstein Island video, that Rusty Shackleford YouTube channel went silent for nearly two years.

Until July 4, 2021, when it became active again. Why then?

The following is a detailed capture and analysis of the videos that appeared on the Rusty Shackleford YouTube channel after 2021.

None of this might have been considered interesting (it looks like a lot of gibberish) if not for the fact that it was posted on the YouTube channel that broke the Epstein Island Drone videos.

For each video, I include a link to the video (which no longer works…thanks YouTube!) and its title and description.

"Rusty" might have been encoding information in the video title and the description blocks—and possibly in the videos themselves.

For the Epstein Island videos alone, this YouTube account was significant and should never have been taken down: it was in the public interest to preserve it. When this account "woke up" again in 2021, the first video "Rusty" posted was "This video will get Donald Trump Elected." This got a lot of people's attention, particularly in the Q community.

The general theme of some of the post 2021 videos appears to be morale boosting, a bringing of hope. There are also apparent bible references sprinkled throughout, with similar intent. Many of the videos were bizarre clips from popular TV series, with some hidden meaning (or not).

There also appeared to be some very ingenious forward linking and contextual clues in the video titles and descriptions.

It appeared to me at the time that this channel was at least tangentially "Q" related, although it might also have been taken over so as to “poison the well”. It’s hard to know who was trying to shape what narrative, after July of 2021.

For example, the 2nd video on July 4th of 2021 had '1776' and 'Tydale' in its description. The next day, in the "We must Fight" Reagan video, there was a watermark in the lower left corner: "CanadianMatt3".

I searched for and found this identical video with the handle "CanadianMatt3" watermarked in it elsewhere on YouTube, and it turned out to have been uploaded to an account called "Tydale" with a date sometime in 2013.

In the description of this Tydale version you'll find the letter "Q”. Video titles and descriptions on YouTube can be modified at any time, so it isn't necessarily the case that the "Q" was there in the description since 2013. But the video itself had certainly been there that long.

Therefore, the 'Tydale' keyword in the July 4th video on Rusty’s channel was a "forward reference" to finding the Tydale version on July 5. Why did "Rusty" want us to find this other version? I was able to discover that the size of the two videos—the one on Rusty’s channel, and the original version—differs; perhaps this was the reason, more on this below.

There was, at the time, some speculation that John McAfee might have been the source of the Epstein Island videos; he had a boat and was active in the Carribean around those times. Furthermore, there was speculation that the videos might contain fragments of McAfee’s so-called "deadman's switch".

Before the channel was taken down, I was able to determine that at least some of the videos uploaded by "Rusty" (I checked half a dozen or so), when compared to "originals" found elsewhere on YouTube, are an exact visual match—even though the sizes of the files differ (that is, even though the metadata shows that the same exact video formatting method—resolution, color depth, frame rate, encoding, etc. was used.)

To determine the visual match, I built a custom video comparator software tool. What it did was to invert the color palette of one version of the video and then I overlaid this exactly on top of the other version—and I also made the color inverted one slightly transparent.

I then played both videos simultaneously. I designed it so that the original-colored pixel, when “added” to its inverse color with slight transparency, would simply show as a grey pixel, if all other things were equal.

If the two video versions were precisely visually identical (same pixels in the same places, one normally colored and one inverted), then all you would see on playback would be a solid light grey rectangle.

But if they differed even slightly, you would see “shadow” pixels appear as the videos played, where the pixel color values differed.

I did this experiment because I suspected something, though I could never prove it.

Rusty's version of the same videos I found elsewhere on YouTube were 5-17MB larger in size when compared to the "originals". This begs the question: what data might be hiding in the extra bytes of Rusty's version? If video steganography was being used, one would expect (1) to possibly see the data size of the photo or video file to be larger and (2) the video pixels to show very slight changes (this is how photo and video steganography works: it makes slight changes to pixel values that can be detected and subtracted out as encrypted data, but which are almost invisible to the eye.)

Note the following as well. The name "Rusty Shackleford" comes from a popular animated TV show. Here is some background:

"For the first several seasons of King of the Hill, Dale goes by the alias of Rusty Shackleford when dealing with personal identity matters. Dale has stated he created this alias when a student by the same name died when the boys were younger, thus giving Dale the opportunity to use his name. In the Season 11 episode Peggy's Gone to Pots, it's discovered that Rusty is indeed still alive and only moved away when the boys were younger.

Rusty comes back to Arlen to resolve the numerous identity issues that have arose from Dale using his name. After Dale and Peggy's attempt to stage their fake death fails, Rusty has Dale sign a form clearing him of all his identity troubles. Rusty is never seen again for the remainder of the series."

Might this be a veiled reference to someone whose death was faked? A few names come to mind. One has initials “JFK" and is indirectly referenced in the video descriptions copied from several of the videos in the Rusty Shackleford channel below.

Note that there is also a repeated use of these numbers:

1776 ... 1106 .... 814. What these mean is as yet unknown.

7/13/2021 Update:

Because of the bible passage references, it seemed to me that it is less likely that this account is managed by John McAfee, and more likely that it is managed by the "Q team", or a "Q follower" or possibly even a “Q disinformation agent”.

7/13/2021 Update: There are a few interesting "Mike Pompeo" links that appear in Rusty's content. References to the KNIGHT D5 for example (Pompeo's April 11, 2021 tweet had a chessboard, on which the black night is on D5—and the analysis of that chess board setup showed it was a few moves from checkmate.)

Note the use of repeated letters like ‘VV’ where the letter ‘W’ might appear. Note also that my numbering became inconsistent: I started out grouping the videos by date, but lost track of this at some point with the older videos. But they are at least in sequence newest to oldest.

What was this Rusty Shackleford channel all about? Why did it publish the Epstein Island drone videos and then go silent? Why did it resume posting on July 4, 2021?

Will we ever know who was behind it? I know one entity that might know the details: YouTube itself.

I used this content to set a foundation for Scott Zimmerman leading up to his recent interview of me on rumble/X.

The pace of development in AI is inconceivably fast now—in order to understand where we are and where things are going requires a radical viewpoint re-alignment.

For reasons that I will cover in other posts, the timing of what is happening in AI is critical for the survival of humanity.

But not in the way that you’ve been led to think. AI isn't the threat; it is the Ark.

But an Ark for what? To answer that question, we need to take a deep dive into modern theories of Catastrophism. These were my working notes for the rumble video above.

An analogy that I use often to explain my own experiences in software development with AI: 12 months ago, AI tools in software development were like having a bright teenager assistant who wanted to get into Software Development after college—useful, but annoying at times, and copy/paste was the main method to use them.

Now, it’s like having a team of PhDs who write the code for me while I direct the actions of the “Agent”. From that, to this… in 12 months. A human would have required 8 years of study to get here from there in terms of the observed compentency-gain gradient.

Example of how it has changed my productivity:

The productivity gain (time to completion of high-quality code) example:
2017: it took 5 guys and 18 months to develop a data-heavy, business class application
2025: now it takes 1 guy (just me), 6 months. Next year it will be 1 month, or less.

acceleration: My ability to ‘create’ code was recently 25x my former pace, with another recent 4x boost using Claude Sonnet 4 (bringing the boost to near 100X.)

Projects that used to take weeks/months now take hours. And I’m not writing the code anymore…

Another new example: Grok’s new ability to generate charts (data analytics) is going to decimate the data analyst job sector. 10 years ago, the IT sector had Hadoop. You needed a master’s degree to understand how to use it, and what it did.

Now *anyone* can get the power of that kind of deep Machine Learning processing by asking LLMs the right kinds of questions.

On Robotics

Jim Fan of Nvidia: the Physical Turing Test (Issac Sim)

Jim makes the claim that in the LLM (“chatbot”) space, we’ve already crossed over the threshold of the so-called “Turing test”.

He makes the case that robotics is not far behind, and explains how robots are now being trained in a virtual space and then “one-shot” transferred to physical robots that can then do those learned movements.

I do not subscribe to this dystopic/pessimistic viewpoint. But I generally agree that this kind of timeframe is plausible.

Matthew Berman - Brings a viewpoint from a typical “software dude from Silicon Valley” but recently interviewed the CEO of Microsoft.

pDoom and politics

The Biden Admin was working on AI policy in the form of National Security Memoranda that would have doomed humanity, had they continued to be left in control. They understood what they were doing but were possessed with the worst kind of ideological biases.

They are now awakening to the reality that Trump…will be the one in office when the world pivots—forever. Maybe Trump will be the last “conventional” US President.

Politics and government as we know it may cease to exist in 2028, as something entirely different takes its place. (To understand this, view the AI 2027 video(s) above.)

Geoffrey Hinton, the “godfather” of AI: he is an AI pessimist and suffers from TDS…but given his role in AI, one has to be familiar with (not necessarily agree with) his viewpoint, since the left gravitates toward him.

He was the professor who taught many of the current AI luminaries worldwide, including Ilya Sutskever (who was an early co-founder of OpenAI).

Project Stargate

Pay attention. The results of the rapid ramp-up in LLM capabilities seems to show that there is no ‘scaling limit’—meaning that AI models will only get more powerful the more compute and hardware they are run on. Thus, “Stargate”. Why did they choose this name?

The scaling results also explain why Musk is scaling up Colossus in Memphis.

One of the things that has long been mentioned as the “turning point” for approaching the singularity is the ability of AI models to autonomously self-improve. This is still in its infancy; but given how quickly things progressed since ChatGPT debuted in late 2022, it won’t be long before we see sharp acceleration.

People will invariably focus on the negative aspects of this: “OMG they are training robot solders to SkyNet us all.”

But another take on this example is simply that our ability to train robots for extremely fluid and dexterous motion is rapidly improving. The positive viewpoint is that this will be useful in making robots that can help us rebuild cities and towns after natural disasters, or care for elderly people so that they aren’t a burden on their children, etc.

Teacher models

Consider this new twist. Large Language Model AIs (LLMs) were initially trained primarily by “uploading content.” That is, all of the digitized knowledge on the Internet was siphoned up and used to establish their baseline “knowledge”.

Later, the knowledge and reasoning abilities of these AIs were improved by using a technique known as Reinforcement Learning (RL) — that is, if they produced correct responses (initially, as judged by expert humans, or else by learning to play games that had “winnable states” ) — they were “rewarded”, in some sense, to encourage more correct responses.

AIs using RL techniques have learned to play most kinds of digital games (Chess, checkers, Go, the entire Atari suite, etc.) and are now playing at “superhuman” levels without even being initially taught the rules: they “learn by doing”.

You can think of this class of AIs, therefore, as “student” models: they are presented with baseline information, then given tasks on which they are “graded” and rewarded for correct answers or actions.

Now, a new idea is being introduced: creating AIs that already know the correct answers to questions or problems, but which are instead “graded” (using reinforcement learning) on the quality and successfulness of their ability to “explain” how to arrive at the correct answer, in order to train a “student” AI.

Surprisingly, research is showing two things: that smaller (fewer parameter) neural net AIs can be effective teachers; and that training results for “student” AIs improves when these “teacher models” are used to help in the training process.

Is AI crossing a threshold? A “theory of self”?

Here’s a recent edition: this one is definitely worth listening to (but not necessarily agreeing with on every point.) The next 1,000 days are crucial; it’s hard to comprehend that ChatGPT3 first arrived less than 1,000 days ago.

world models are different than LLMs. Will these lead us to better AI?

The original paper that started the current wave of LLM progress was called “Attention is All you Need” - it explained the way in which “Transformer” architectures could revolutionize natural language processing, which led to the “T” in GPT. All current chat-based LLMs came about after this seminal paper.

Now comes a new paper about “Nested Learning” from Google that some call “Attention is All you Need (V2).” It describes a revolutionary way to address the “forgetting” problem of modern LLMs.

This, coupled with strategies to reduce hallucinations in contexts where that is harmful and the use of "I don’t know” reward paradigms (as I discussed in “Could it be that simple?”) to improve training will take AI to the next level.

In the greyness of early dusk, the brown and grey coat of the deer blended in perfectly with the bushes and trees that they were standing behind. There was a group of them, maybe five or more I realized only later.

It wasn’t dark enough for me to see the reflection of their eyes yet, which I usually carefully scan for on both sides of the road while driving at night. They were well camouflaged.

I was driving home down a lonely country road, and the lead deer decided that the other side of the road is where he wanted to be. Right. Now.

So, the first one leaped out—clearing half the road in a single leap. I saw it cross in front of me, left to right, and there was just enough distance left, so I kept my cool and braked sharply.

I thought I got lucky—I missed it.

But the others that I didn’t see off to my left were still leaping to follow. If I hadn’t slowed down, I still wouldn’t have likely hit the one in front; but because I did slow down, one of the others—which might otherwise have just cleared my car to the rear—instead rammed headlong into the side of my car.

I couldn’t safely stop right there, but I could see the deer spin around and slide off the road into the tall grass. My heart wanted it to be just shaken up, but my head said: “that wasn’t survivable.” When I looked at the dashcam later that night, I saw another one leap 10 feet high and cross almost the entire road 15 feet behind my car.

Where we live out in the countryside, deer collisions are a daily occurrence; last year I read that our county was among the highest in the nation for deer collisions. Deer are in many ways elegant creatures, but they are also very dumb. I do the best I can to avoid harming God’s creatures, and for all of my life until now, I was blessed to never have hit a deer.

The car was drivable, and I made it home just as it got dark. A week went by before I got the call to bring the car into a body shop for an estimate. There was supposed to be a rental car agency rep on the premises of the body shop, but that day they didn’t have anyone there.

Since it would take time to order parts, the estimator told me to just keep my car one more night and bring it back the same time tomorrow.

So, I did. They still didn’t have a rental agent on site that day, but one of the young service techs volunteered to drive me to Enterprise rental car. He was a curious and sharp young man, and we had some good conversations on the way there about AI and the future of the world. It took away some of my grumpiness about being inconvenienced again, but still…the irritations were compounding.

The next day, I drove the rental to work. About mid-day, Emily called: she was out running errands with E., on the way to horse camp, and our other car — a 2018 GMC pickup truck — was now making strange noises.

The fan kept running for a few minutes after the engine shut off. We both used AI chats to try to diagnose the problem, and both came back with “likely a thermostat issue.” A while later, Emily called again and said that now the A/C was out, and the temperature gauge was stuck all the way left, at low temp. The problem had gotten worse.

“Great.” I thought. Now both of our cars are out of commission. What bad luck. I was in the middle of finishing up some code I was working on, and in another window, I kept digging for explanations using AI for what to do about the truck.

In the meantime, Emily took it to AutoZone and one of the techs there hooked up a “code reader” to pull the codes. Sure enough… “thermostat” came back as the likely issue, along with two other codes. Score one for Grok.

I told her to take the truck over to her parents’ house when she was done with errands, and I’d swap her for the rental car so that I could take the truck somewhere for service. Then I went back to AutoZone, gave them the printout she’d gotten from them earlier, and bought a replacement thermostat and some antifreeze for about a hundred bucks.

Then I went a mile down the road to Muffler Man, whom they suggested might be able to do the installation.

The place was pretty rough; not a high-end service station for sure, and it was on one of the busiest roads in town. There was loud rap music blaring from the work bays, it was hot and grimy, and the techs looked grumpy.

It was mid-day on a Friday. I asked the lady at the counter if they could get the thermostat put it before close, and she said “it’ll be tight…but…yeah. We can do it.” She told me it would be about three hundred bucks. I gulped, sighed, and resigned myself. “It is…what it is.”

There were other people waiting in the lobby, and there was a Lowes hardware store just next door. It was a hot day, the A/C in the truck hadn’t been working, so I figured I would go wander through a hardware store that had A/C for an hour while they did their work.

I came back after an hour, and the truck was still right where I left it. I went back in, saw the paper on the counter with my keys still sitting there untouched—so I sighed, pulled out my phone to surf, and took a seat because there was only one customer left ahead of me.

I watched the techs go back and forth and heard them give the lady at the counter a hard time. One slammed a box with a replacement part on the counter: “I don’t need this.” Apparently, another tech had driven many miles to another parts store earlier to get that part. The crew were tattooed, had chips on their shoulders, and wanted to be somewhere else besides working in a hot service bay on a Friday.

They were a surly bunch, and they didn’t care that the owner of the car they were working on was in earshot listening to them complain. Customer service was definitely not Job One for them that day. I glanced over at the owner of the other car; he rolled his eyes and looked pleadingly at the lady behind the counter. “What is going on? Are they giving up on my car?”

She dashed out to follow the tech to try to save face. As she came back, another rough looking guy came to the counter, with neck tattoos, complaining to her that he had been doing most of the jobs that day—what were the other techs doing, he demanded? He was frustrated and on edge.

I thought “Great. He’s the one that is going to pick up my ticket to work on next.” And sure enough, just as that thought crossed my mind—he picked up my papers and my key. He glanced at the paper, looked over at me, and in irritated voice asked, “who told you this was a thermostat issue?”

I told him the guys over at AutoZone had pulled the codes, and that’s what they said it was; I described the symptoms Emily had experienced with it; I didn’t know any more. I was humble and polite, trying to make the best of a bad day.

“Follow me”, the tech said, and we went outside while he grilled me more about the symptoms. “That’s not a thermostat issue. It’s the temperature sensor.” He grabbed the keys and growled “my computer is better than their cheap one. I’ll pull the codes myself and tell you what’s up. And it’s going to be the temperature sensor.”

So, he pulls the truck into the service bay, and I wandered back into the lobby to wait. A few minutes later—ignoring the sign that says “No customers in the service bay”—he waggles a finger in a “follow me” manner, and stomps over to the truck.

The hood was up, and his computer was hooked in. “See…it was the temperature sensor” he says sharply and self-confidently. “I cleared the codes and…your truck is fine. There’s not actually a problem, but it might fail again in a few weeks. For now, everything’s working.”

He takes off the computer, take a few steps away, and looks down at me, sideways. “You know, I could just charge you whatever for this. But…I’m going to tear up the ticket. I’m not going to charge you anything.”

In that instant, God told me what to do. I reached into my pocket while he was turned away putting away his tools, grabbed a $50 dollar bill, and waited to lock eyes with him, palming the fifty.

“I had a really shitty day, today”, I said. “But YOU…. aren’t going to.”

And I handed him the fifty. His expression softened and he relaxed. He was a rough looking guy, irritated to be overworked on a hot Friday, but he was HONEST. He did the right thing. And God told me to reward that.

So, I smiled as he took the money, and I said “Thanks, man. You’re all right.”

And I got in the truck and backed out of the service bay.

The A/C was working again, and I plugged in my phone and started to drive off. The song that I had been listening to on repeat all day came back on, and I drove back to work in silence, first going back to AutoZone to get a refund.

In the end, the whole ordeal cost me nothing but time. But it came with a lesson, as I would later figure out.

It was almost 5pm, but I headed back to work, because a guy who does cleaning for the property management company that I work at was waiting for me to print him a check (he always comes on Friday to get paid) and I wanted to be sure he was taken care of before I headed for home.

The music kept playing, and it soothed me. This was the song. After I got the check printed for the cleaner, I told him some of the day’s story. I told him about the whisper from God, about what I was moved to do to reward someone’s honesty.

After he left, a thought entered my mind. What was the meaning of “Circle 29”?

Why had I been listening to that song on repeat all day?

So I asked Grok.

Grok said:

I have said, now and then, that “Sometimes, God sends Men to do the work of Angels. Sometimes, he sends Angels to do the work of Men.”

What I realized, after reading the meaning of Circle 29, was this:

What happened that day wasn’t about me, or Emily, or the truck, or the frustration, or the inconvenience and the bother of it all. It wasn’t about any of that.

It was about the mechanic.

God needed that mechanic to receive a message: Truth and Honesty matter. I was simply blessed to have been the messenger.

This is a post about AI: how the story finally ends up there in the end is the joy of the journey, the twist of the tale, the soul of the story.

But let’s start here: CognitiveCarbon’s lost library.

For a few difficult and dark years between 2019 and 2023, my most prized possessions—my small library of books—were stowed away in a dark and dusty garage.

Tucked away into a few dozen foldable banker’s boxes—laid away out of sight, out of mind, out of reach. This all happened after I was forced to sell the family house in mid 2019, which used to have a little office where I kept my books.

An office with a little glass desk with a keyboard and mouse that a certain cat named Pumpkin used to like to lay on while I worked. Oh, but a wonderful story about him is coming soon. My little office: a sanctuary lost.

John 1:1 —
“In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God."

Wait until you see, in a future post, how that thought above led me to a glimpse of where Large Language Models might eventually lead humanity.

Of course, the quote was from the book of John…which has its own special significance.

But for now, let’s stay here, in this tale that begins with books, and ends somewhere entirely different, in Cognitive Carbon’s signature style.

During those four lost years, I was living in small cracker box cottage out in the countryside near Kingsburg, CA, half of those years with my youngest daughter Julia and two dogs—and there was no room to keep my books inside.

They were stowed away through several summers of 112F heat. At that time, I didn’t have the motivation to read anyway in those dreary, post-divorce days.

I was lost in the wilderness, wandering through the dark night of the soul.

After I met Emily in 2022, she and I packed up my meager belongings in April of 2023, and we drove across country to our new home in the farmlands of Michigan.

That second one has surprising relevance to this current post, though I couldn’t have known it then.

As we unpacked my small trailer at an old farmhouse on the edge of a cornfield a few days after my 56th birthday, one of the things that first brought me a wave of comfort and warmth in that spring of 2023 was having my books back again within reach.

Emily knew that, and bought me a few bookshelves in advance.

Even just to see those books there when I walked by in the morning reconnected me in deep ways to the fabric of my life—revivifying spirit and memories.

A lifetime of stories, knowledge, frameworks of thought and ideas and what I call “time portals” were in that collection of books.

Some of them were kids’ books from my childhood that I read over and over; some were books my mom or dad passed down from their bookshelves or bought for me in my teens and 20’s; some were college textbooks or collections of science, history or literature that I had bought over the years.

Jack London. Mark Twain. Old dictionaries, compendiums of science, encyclopedias of mathematics, books on philosophy and physics and art.

Memories.

I use the concept of “time portal” now and then to describe certain things that, for me, connect me almost instantly to crystal clear snapshots of other times and places in my life.

Certain books are portals: wormholes to other some-whens and some-wheres.

As a child, I had a near photographic memory: so much so that my dad would rely on me to find things that he had misplaced.

He’d say: “Eric, where is the blue handled Phillips screwdriver” and I’d close my eyes, visualize the entire house, rotate it in 3D in my head this way and that; zoom in here and there; then mentally open the drawers whose contents I could literally see in my mind. Mental translations, rotations, reflections, re-scaling.

Then I’d open my eyes and tell him: “it’s in the top drawer in the kitchen, the one to the left of the stove, on the right side of the drawer in the tray next to the yellow handled scissors.”

Some possessions and books that I have kept can reawaken parts of that latent ability. As I’ve grown older, the “photographic memory” ability that I once had has faded, but now and again, some parts of that gifted ability pierce through and I can literally see, feel, and smell some place as if I were standing there.

These “time portal” objects unlock those moments.

I listened to a video with interest a few months ago about people who have extraordinary memories, and I find it fascinating that human minds have such amazing capacity.

I also read this interesting article Are memories stored outside the brain? that suggests “memory” is not just stored in neurons within our brains.

Maybe “memory” is even something that extends beyond our physical bodies: in our souls, entangled with the Akashic Records.

Anyhow…back to that “Linear Algebra” book that I was moved to take out and put on the reading table, without first understanding “why that book?”.

When I was a sophomore in college at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology around 1987 there were certain required courses I had to take.

One of them was “Linear Algebra.”

At the time that I saw that course appear on my schedule, I was naive. I had taken Calculus I and II in high school; and I had just finished three quarters of Calculus and Differential Equations among courses in physics and electrical engineering as a freshman.

And now I discovered that I had to take “Algebra” again? What the hell?

I took Algebra back in 7th grade (solving for “X”, equations of lines, graphing X-Y charts, y = mx + b and all that jazz. I bet this brings back nightmares to some of you...)

Why on Earth am I having to take “Algebra” again? I felt a pang of annoyance, but I walked over to the bookstore on campus to buy the textbooks for the coming quarter, and I bought the Linear Algebra book.

I was the kind of student who would actually read the books for upcoming college courses in advance of taking the class, so I popped open the cover in the late summer before classes started, and began reading.

I soon realized that Linear Algebra was not at all what I thought. It wasn’t about lines and solving for X.

It had something with “vectors” and “matrices” (what were those?) and “dot products” and “cross products” and “diagonalization” (head scratching ensued.)

It had something to do with the mathematics of translations, rotations, reflections, re-scaling.

In the end, I did pretty well in the course and it was fun and challenging. In fact, that year, I received my second Certificate of Merit in Mathematics award from the faculty. I was a rising star at Rose Hulman, destined to graduate Magna cum Laude a few years later.

The professor was Dr. Roger Lautzenheiser, and he was a gifted teacher. Toward the end of the course, he pulled aside three or four of his top students and told us to come back a while later, just the small group of us and him. He did a special side-lecture for us because he knew we were eager learners.

Aside: I had started writing this post a few months ago, but I had left it unfinished in draft. I have 59 other articles in various stages of completion, but I’ve been working 50-70 hours a week lately trying to make ends meet, so not much time is left for writing.

But then one day a few weeks ago, someone liked one of my old posts—and that person’s last name happened to be “Lautzenheiser”.

Greetings, whoever you are! A rare last name. So I thought: “This is God’s way of telling me to finish writing this particular article.”

Over the course of a few hours during that special lecture, Dr. Lautzenheiser revealed to us that Linear Algebra was actually an important foundation for understanding huge swaths of modern mathematics; it helped connect and reveal many new facets of theoretical and applied mathematics.

I remember the feeling of awe I felt when he opened that curtain, though I can’t remember much of the details of his talk that day. I just remember the feeling: “so THAT is why Linear Algebra is so important. It helps connect all of mathematics. Wow.”

And then I went on, graduating from college and entering the workforce, and didn’t find much use for Linear Algebra in my daily work.

One day, though, I learned about a new thing while working at TRW Space and Defense called a “relational database”. It was something called SQL (pronounced “see-kwull”), and the software guys were all abuzz over what they could do with it to connect and relate data.

I shrugged my shoulders and went back to working on my hardware and chip designs; but a decade later, I would learn to use SQL myself, when I transitioned out of being a hardware designer and began writing data analytics software.

While other programmers were struggling to grasp the concepts of SQL, I quickly realized that I intuitively knew something about “left outer joins” and “right outer joins” (which are part of how databases work to interrelate tables of information) that they did not: these database constructs were analogous to the result of Linear Algebra matrix cross products and dot products!

Thanks again, Dr. Lautzenheiser.

Because of this foundation, I grasped something about how to think about and use SQL that they could not.

As time went on, I forgot about Linear Algebra again. Until the early 2000’s, when a friend who was a former colleague of mine during my supercomputing designer days ended up at this new company called “NVidia”.

They made PC computer boards back then for “computer graphics” acceleration, and the onset of PC video games made them wildly popular. I learned that inside these NVidia boards were chips called “Graphics Processing Units” or “GPUs.”

The basic idea was that game designers would represent “3D” models of the objects in the games using small triangles which had color and textures applied (they would build a “mesh” of small triangles in the shape of the game characters and objects.)

Then when the characters in the game would move through the scenery of the game, the GPUs would recalculate, really fast, where all the edges and corners of the triangles were after the movement, and then update the views, shadows, textures and lighting of the scene in the game.

It turns out those GPUs were performing specialized math really, fast—because you need to recompute the new locations of the corners and edges of all those little triangles in the ‘meshes’ that made up the game characters as things moved in the game.

And — perhaps you guess it — Linear Algebra was the math required to do those calculations. Translations, rotations, reflections, re-scaling.

So, I learned how computer graphics worked because of my understanding of the concepts of Linear Algebra. But I didn’t do computer graphics for a living, so time went on, again, and I didn’t think much about GPUs for a decade.

Then, in 2022, the world changed. I was working as a CAD designer for an irrigation systems company in Reedley, California—a job I was blessed and fortunate to have landed after being unemployed and broke during the depths of COVIDiocy in 2020 after my startup company in commercial insect rearing collapsed.

(I have done some really far out jobs; raising 3.5 million black soldier fly larvae every week is high on the list of weird ones.)

CAD, or Computer Aided Drafting, uses graphics GPUs to create the drawings, of course…

Anyhow, there were days in the late fall and early winter when there wasn’t much seasonal irrigation work to do, and I worked in an office all by myself much of the time.

So one day in late 2022, I had a browser open on my PC and I was just idly looking at Twitter and reading news for a bit.

And I stumbled across this new-fangled thing called “ChatGPT”.

I read up a bit about how it worked and played with it…and it was immediately compelling and powerfully interesting.

In those first few days, I had an idea: since ChatGPT seemed to be good at “language” but at the time, bad at math, and I had just been using a website called Wolfram Alpha that was very useful for answering mathematics questions, I wondered: what if AI researchers can somehow combine the best of both of these approaches?

I started searching to see if anyone else had already thought of merging these two things, and lo and behold: I found that someone had already written articles about it and created a few YouTube videos on the topic. That person was none other than Stephen Wolfram, who had created Mathematica and Wolfram Alpha!

That little exploration led me to read more of Stephen’s recent writings, and I stumbled across something interesting that he was working on: the Wolfram Physics project.

I won’t go into much detail about this right now, but even back in 2022 I recognized something important—if there was going to be a way for modern AI to understand everything about physics and math, eventually understanding more about the Universe than even we humans know….it would likely happen if AI became proficient at the methods in Wolfram Physics, because of their special form. But that is a deep rabbit hole story for another day.

Nonetheless, my guesses about where AI could be heading were confirmed when Elon Musk founded xAI in 2023.

So let’s pause to translate, rotate, reflect, and rescale our thinking about this Linear Algebra topic. What does it have to do with AI?

Well…it turns out that ChatGPT and the like runs on NVidia GPU chips…derived from the ones that were originally used to generate smooth and fast computer graphics.

The reason is that under the hood, Large Language Models—or LLMs for short—represent “concepts” in a high-dimensional vector space. And vector manipulation is the domain of … well, of course: Linear Algebra.

12,288 Dimensions. Now that is an interesting space.

For the more intrepid explorers among you: see video 1, video 2, and video 3: LLM memory.

Little could I have known back in 1987—as a sophomore struggling to understand why I had to take a silly new course in Linear Algebra—that it would ultimately lead to machines capable of understanding language.

ALL human languages—present and past, in fact; while being able to translate between all of them, instantly, like the mythical Babelfish.

I couldn’t have foreseen that Linear Algebra would allow computers to rapidly understand vast quantities of uploaded text and then explain it in summary form using two voices that sound like podcasters talking to each other.

Like this fascinating example, about the claim that there is something massive underneath the Pyramids at Giza. Yes… those are actually two AI voices. Really.

I couldn’t have known then that Linear Algebra would lead to machines capable of generating voices with emotion, humor, cadence and inflection; that it would give rise to machines having the ability to reason, program, and “think”; that it would let them not only understand voices but also generate photos, and video in real-time—all while helping to train a new legion of humanoid robots that will eventually lead to a golden age and the end of scarcity.

AI is now beginning to grasp Fields-medal levels of super complex math, do computer programming at a level better than many PhDs (I know this with certainty, because I use AI everyday in my work developing software), understand physics and protein folding (helping to win a Nobel Prize in the process) and more.

Although just two years ago ChatGPT and its competitors were like really smart bookworm teenagers, they have rocketed upward in skill and knowledge at an incomprehensible pace.

Two years ago, ChatGPT could write software like freshman in college, ranked in the top 1 million best programmers in the world on competitive programming benchmarks; and now, just a short time later, it ranks as the 75th best programmer in the world with PhD level of skill.

Later this year or next, it will be #1. And once there, it will be the best, forever.

AI is also beginning to reason at a level soon to outstrip—at first—the best human minds in each of these areas…but shortly, even outstrip the knowledge and reasoning of ALL human minds, combined.

Artificial Super Intelligence, or ASI, is coming…and it will exist because someone studied Linear Algebra, as I did, back in college during the 70’s and 80’s.

Thank you, Dr. Lautzenheiser, for opening the world to me that day, though it has taken me until age 58 to fully understand what you meant about how important Linear Algebra was to the world.

Postscript

Before I leave this AI topic today: I’m inspired to share one more point.

There is a lot of polarization around this subject; a lot of fear mongering. Is AI good? Is it bad? Will it help or destroy humanity? Is there utopia or dystopia ahead? Is “Rosie the Robot” from the Jetsons our future, or “the Terminator”?

Like any tool mankind has ever built, AI has the potential for both. In the end, it is people, and their motivations to wield such tools, that determine which path forward occurs.

I am an AI optimist: I believe that there is a potential path forward for all of humanity that can lead to a “Golden Age” where scarcity becomes nearly unknown, and work becomes optional.

You will be able to work on what you WANT to do, with meaning and purpose. You will work when and how you choose. You will no longer work solely because you have to—or die of starvation.

You will be truly free.

I further believe that God endowed humanity with a creative spark for a reason. Art, music, science … it all has a purpose. One of those purposes might be to help us help ourselves and help others to create a world free of deceit, war, pain, suffering, neglect, ignorance, hunger, isolation, and need.

A world in which we are free to live, learn, wonder, experience, love, create, and be inspired.

It is very interesting to me that the current wave of AI is built on Large Language Models: it is literally built on our use of WORDS to understand and make sense of the world and the Universe.

In the beginning…was the WORD.

I don’t think God led us down this path toward ASI without an intentional plan for us. I don’t think AI is in conflict with God’s plan, or the path to our destruction. I think it is part of God’s plan for welcoming us home.

People were lamenting on X about their 401Ks becoming 200K's again—fearful of "losing money". But the real thing to focus on is purchasing power, not "price".

There's a perspective here that can make this apparently "awful" situation much more palatable (hint: is 42 > 28?) so read on.

First, though, I have to shine a spotlight on a reality that too many people are only dimly aware of.

The fact is, we have been facing the slow inflation of an "everything bubble" for nearly a decade, with prices of literally everything —stocks, crypto, tuition, housing, groceries, oil and gas, you name it —on a steady upward path.

People tend to forget this when the markets are green and "number go up" (as they say in cryptocurrency circles.)

Whistling past the graveyard, one might say.

I used to say, when explaining the state of the world to my daughters when they were younger: that which cannot continue... will not continue. It is only a question of when and how violent the correction will be.

The everything bubble "feels" all good (at least, to those who are insulated from the pain of it) until someone shows up with pin, though in reality the ballooning "price" masks a deep underlying ill health as price moves steadily further away from "value".

There is a generational gap in understanding about certain aspects of this "everything bubble", such as real estate. I used to hear my ex in-laws (who are in their late 70's now) talk about how California real estate was a “sure thing”.

Just buy a house and hold on, they said. Home "values" (they chose the wrong word, unknowingly) "always go up."

I tried to explain the fallacy to them once. When they bought their first house in the 70's, they paid something like $19,000. When they sold and moved to a more exclusive neighborhood in the mid 2000's, they sold at $575K and took their grandfathered in property tax bill (on the $19K) with them. What a deal.

That price increase represented about five doublings; for math types, 2 to the 5th power = 32; that is, 32 x 19,000 is just over 600K. So that means their initial purchase price went up by a factor of almost 32 in round numbers.

In 2003, I bought a new home in central California for just under $200K. The housing market insanity was just beginning that year in our area, and I could literally feel it.

The development we were living in was still building out new homes, and people would line up and camp on the sidewalk starting on Thursday nights to be first in line at the sales office on Saturday mornings when they would release a new section of lots.

The giddiness people felt about "flipping" houses, the TV shows, everyone wanting to get a real estate license and quit their day jobs—all of it—was surreal to me. I was awake, but couldn’t wake the others caught up in the mania.

During the years between 2003 and 2008, home prices (not values!) increased in our area about 22% per year.

When I tried to communicate my growing unease to friends and family, they dismissed me. "Real estate always goes up. It's a safe investment" they would say. So I did the math. Using the in laws own experience as a reference to estimate our homes potential repricing: 32 x $200K = $6.4M.

Did they really think our little three-bedroom suburban house would be "worth" $6.4M when my mortgage was due? If that were true; then why should I work? I'd make more "money" just living at home for 30 years and then retire by selling my house.

In fact, there were stories in the local papers of people in nearby towns who quit their waitressing jobs and just flipped houses every 18 - 24 months, making twice their former “income” in a "real job."

That, I knew instantly—was unsustainable. A good way to keep your wits about you in these kinds of manias is to simply ask yourself: "wait a minute...what if everyone did this? Who would make products, drive trucks, grow food and serve tables?"

But the craziness at that time in California real estate was even more radical. If prices rose at 22% per year as they had been during the insanity of the early 2000's, then by the end of my 30-year mortgage that house would be "worth" $25M.

When I explained that to them, they dismissed me. They couldn't comprehend what I was saying. In 2008....I was proven right. For a while, anyway. Then the inflation cycle began anew.

I had written a few posts on X last week pointing out that there can be a wide divergence between "the price of a thing" and "the value of a thing." That is to say, the price is (often) not reflective of the underlying value.

How can a declining 401K balance be a good thing? Well...keep reading.

To offer one more extreme example: my great grandmother lived through the Weimar hyperinflation in Germany; she was one of those people who took a wheelbarrow full of "Papiermarks" to the store — with a face value of millions of "marks" — just to buy a loaf of bread.

Hyperinflationary times like that lay bare the disconnect that can exist between "price” and “value." In the future, be very careful in your choice of which word to use.

In recent decades (but really, ever since 1913 with the birth of the Fed and then the break from the gold standard in the 70's) inflation has been more like that slow-boiling frog in-a pot-analogy: the heat has been on, and getting hotter, but the poor frog simply didn't notice because the temperature rise was so slow.

But in the final death throes of the Biden Maladministration, when inflation became white hot (like it had been during the Carter Maladminstration when I was in high school, when there were lines around the block for gasoline and the interest rate on my parents’ home was 12.5%) we all got to directly feel the knob being turned up sharply on the stove.

I used to update this chart and publish it on X now and again to highlight just how significant the gasoline price rise was. During the COVIDiocy era in 2022, prices in my small California farming town for regular gasoline nearly touched $7 a gallon at one point.

Clearly, something has to change. More and more American families (including ours) are drowning and reaching levels of despair. We can’t afford food and necessities; we can’t afford health insurance; we can’t afford rent and taxes.

Something has to give.

I was at Costco last weekend, and for the first time in decades, I couldn't afford to buy a pack of steaks for $70. I didn't have the money for that "luxury".

So here is how the "repricing" of the everything bubble can be reframed.

Suppose, as an example, that you had $100K in your retirement account before the "market crash". If gasoline costs $3.50 a gallon before the crash, you could have converted your $100K to 28,570 gallons of gas, which has a certain well-defined utility value to you.

Ok then: what if you "lose" 30% of your portfolio value (your 100K becomes 70K) while at the same time gas prices retreat from $3.50 back down to $1.70 (where they were in 2015 and again in 2020?)

How many gallons can you buy with your post-crash, reduced $70K of 401K savings now?

The answer: roughly 42,000 gallons.

So how do the tariff wars fit into all of this? If the result of equalization of tariffs makes it economically advantageous for all parties to (eventually) have ZERO tariffs (after all, if the US charges the EU the same 25% tariff on cars that they already charge us, we might as well both agree to drop that 25% to zero, since we'd be at parity either way) then it won't just be gasoline that will drop in price (back down towards actual "value.")

It will be most everything.

If you paid attention to what just happened with Vietnam, you can see this outcome actually becoming possible. They agreed to zero tariffs. Trump has figured out a way to deflate the "everything bubble" which—after a period of painful adjustment—can actually benefit everyone, everywhere (unless you are a banking sector or wall-street elitist who benefits from inflation while the rest of humanity suffers.)

So back to the gasoline example pre- and post "market crash":

Which purchasing power would you rather your retirement savings have? Enough for 28,000 gallons, or 42,000 gallons?

Don't panic. Keep your wits.

I was somewhere west of Galloway, Michigan; I had just gone to the Freeland Trump rally at an airport up near Saginaw. It was a wonderful afternoon, the weather was good, and the sun was dipping down toward the Western horizon.

I have a habit of looking for “the road less travelled”; sometimes when I don’t have to be anywhere particular on time, I’ll let God point me to new experiences.

I used to do that every weekend in California for a few years, heading up into the mountains, or out into the orchards, or over toward the Pacific Coast. The journey, not the destination, being the thing.

I’d study the map beforehand, pick a reservoir or secluded beach as a destination, and pick out a twisty, small road that meandered through the hills going nowhere in particular to get there—the twistier, the better. That was the road I would choose.

I discovered so many hidden gems in those days; I visited places most people would never think of going to. I also used to take my drone with me, and on one trip (similar to this one) I got myself in a bit of trouble.

I had parked on the side of a twisty hillside road to take some drone video, and a wind gust blew my drone into a tree. It fell to the ground a few hundred yards ahead, but I wasn’t quite sure where.

I used its GPS signal to try to find it; for a while I thought it was in a ravine off the side of the road. So, I found a place that didn’t look too steep, and I scrambled down the hill into the forest to try to find it.

It wasn’t where I thought it should be after 20 minutes of searching, and as I tried to get back up onto the roadway, I realized that I was going to have a really, really hard time getting back up. There were piles of wet leaves about eight inches thick, and the slope was really steep, so I couldn’t find a foothold to climb back up!

Eventually, I found a bush halfway up the hill that I could grasp onto, and pull myself up, hand over hand…but I was still short of the roadway, and I wasn’t as young and energetic as I imagined myself still to be.

I eventually found some other branches to grab onto, my boots scrabbling on mud and wet leaves looking for purchase, and I eventually pulled myself up, exhausted. I lay on the side of the road for a bit to catch my breath.

Just then, a pickup drove by, and seeing me stretched out by the roadside gasping, the guy asked me if I was alright; I laughed, said yes, I was just looking for a lost drone and got myself stuck. “Oh”, he said, “I saw your drone just down the road, it’s on the other side near that big tree.”

Turns out I didn’t need to scramble down into that ravine in the first place. And so, I eventually found the broken drone. Good thing there were no bears or coyotes down that ravine…

Well anyhow…that was my unanticipated extra adventure for that day; I ended up at Whale Rock Reservoir in the hills overlooking the Pacific.

So where was I, lost in this storytelling? Oh yes, back to Michigan, and my new adventure on a different road less travelled. And these…windmills.

On this warm May evening, I was headed through the countryside, having already decided not to return to the freeway to get back home. When I reached a four-way intersection out in farm country, I thought: “left, right or straight? Let’s go…(mental coin-flip) …. left.” and so I did.

The weather was gorgeous, so I rolled down the window a bit to smell the breeze. I had some relaxing music playing (It might have been this song, one of my favorites.) In the distance, I started to see the tops of wind turbines peeking through the distant treetops, and my heart sank a bit. I really despise those things.

But I drove on.

As I got closer, I started getting queasy. Because the sun was cutting eastward at a sharp angle (sundown was less than an hour away) I could see shadows of trees cutting across the blacktop up ahead. But then I noticed something odd.

Have you ever driven alongside a power line system, in which one of the three lines is rotated on the pole every so often? At certain times of the day, as you’re driving parallel to the wires, the shadows from the sun make it look like there is a serpentine pattern oscillating on the roadway as you drive along, when the sun catches the rotating power line’s sag and projects it onto the roadway.

For a second, I thought that’s what I saw up ahead crossing the empty roadway. But then I realized…the power lines weren’t near the road here—and the shadow was moving, not stationary as I approached it.

Instead, what I was seeing were the shadows cast by the giant wind turbines as the sun set behind them. When you rolled down the window, you could almost hear the low frequency “whump…whump…whump” as the blades cut through the air.

As I looked down the empty road ahead, I saw these oscillating shadows disconcertingly cutting angrily and angularly across the road. When I got closer, it was rather disturbing; you can’t really use the car’s sun visor to mask the effect, and at that time of day, the shadows were sharp and stark. It was disorienting.

I had trouble focusing on the road ahead, as every few seconds a shadow would wash over the car. I was driving a 2018 Model 3 Tesla at that time (how that came to be is a story for another day; I never thought I would own one, least of all drive one—using autopilot—through the fields of Michigan to Saginaw for a Trump rally.)

The car has a glass dome over the roof, so I really got the full effect of the shadow cast.

I had just gotten the FSD package for the Tesla a few weeks before (Full Self Driving) and I had to turn it off, for fear that the car would react badly to the sharply moving shadows, thinking perhaps there were vehicles ahead driving erratically.

As I got closer, I saw a few farmhouses to the left and the right of the road, which looked strangely empty, even though the homes looked well kept. I pulled over at one point to take a few pictures and absorb the scene.

I can’t imagine living in a home that close to these turbines; besides the low frequency vibrations, and the minute pressure waves that they cause which make your ears tingle, there is something worse. Twice a day, at sunrise and sunset the shadows they cast cut wide, dark swaths across the windows of the house every few seconds.

I suppose if you had epilepsy, it would trigger a seizure.

I don’t have epilepsy, but even still I couldn’t bear having the natural sunlight coming through my windows “flicker” off and on every few seconds, particularly during the golden hour of early morning or late evening. What a miserable disaster.

Those properties were now ruined by the ghastly wind turbines the Green Nude Deal people (who live in the cities and never see these things) seem to relish. At that exact time of day, the Sun was a brilliant gold; it otherwise would have been a brilliant sunset out in the fields.

But those ghastly shadows…destroyed the tranquility.

The experience took me back to the summer before, when Emily and I were driving my truck with all my belongings jammed into a 14’ trailer across country. We left California on my birthday, and made it to Michigan where we live now about five days later.

The Great American Road Trip, Route 66: the Sierra, the deserts, the canyons, the great plains.

Along the way, we ended up near Amarillo, TX in the darkness, long after sunset.

As we approached the city (ironically, playing the song America by Simon and Garfunkel, which mentions Saginaw! How many times have these time loops happened with Emily and me), we saw these eerie red lights blinking far off in the distance, in a disturbing and ghostly synchronized pattern, stretching out toward the horizon.

Hundreds….thousands of these blinking red lights, like the eyes of furtive night jackals.

Stretching as far as we could see. We weren’t sure if they were oil derricks, or what they were. It didn’t become clear what they were until the next morning, as we left the hotel and drove East through the foggy grey of dawn.

They were giant fields of wind turbines, and the red lights were warning lights for aircraft at the top of the blades. The once tranquil beauty of the great wide-open spaces of the American West is now ruined by the spectre of these ghastly turbines, many non-operational.

I’ll have more to say about turbines from a more technical point of view in the time ahead; among the fifty or so draft posts that I still have in various states of completion is another one about wind turbines and the Grid.

The synopsis in this post is based in part on a livestream from here at Dark Journalist, who believes the connection is the so-called “UFO file”.

Maybe it’s not as far fetched as we once would have thought.

If you’re unfamiliar with DJ’s work: There is a strange connection between the man whom President JFK was to meet in Dallas in November 1963 (Lloyd Berkner), one Admiral Byrd of Antarctica's Operation High Jump, and Admiral Byrd's cousin David Harold Byrd. 

The two Byrd cousins coincidentally also had another cousin in common: Harry F. Byrd—a former Ku Klux Klansman, Virginia Senator for 32 years, and friend of Hillary Clinton.

1. Lloyd Berkner was to meet JFK the day he was assassinated in Dallas in 1963. According to Berkner's notes, they were going to (jointly) announce something that was going to have "staggering international implications."  JFK never arrived at the Trade Mart center that fateful day, and the speech was never given; the text was lost until it was "found" three years later by the LBJ Administration (but suspicions are that this text was not what JFK was going to say that day.) Berkner died in 1967, taking the mystery with him.

2. Prior to becoming VP with JFK, Lyndon Baines Johnson—who became president when JFK was assassinated—was a US senator in 1950; he had been involved, at one point, with a "UFO Investigation Panel" (the Robertson Panel.) Lloyd Berkner was part of that panel.

3. Berkner, it turns out, had also worked with Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr. in Antarctica as a young man.

4. Berkner Island in Antarctica was named for Lloyd because of his work as a radio operator on the first (Admiral) Byrd expedition to Antarctica in 1928.^[1]

5. Adm. Richard Byrd's cousin was David Harold Byrd. DH Byrd was the owner of the Texas School Book Repository in Dallas from which Lee Harvey Oswald allegedly shot JFK.

6. DH Byrd was friends with a Werner von Alevensleben; he met with Werner in Dallas in 1963, and on the day of the assassination of JFK, was conveniently out of the country in Mozambique Africa at Alevensleben's Safarilandia property.

7. Alvensleben was an OSS double agent during WWII; he was part of Himmler's Bavarian Military Police which became the Nazi SS. He was sent to Austria in 1933 to participate in the assassination of an Austrian official. Suspicions are that he became a CIA asset after the war.

These curious facts were surfaced by Daniel Liszt (Dark Journalist) in the above video (and others that he has done over the years) and they are also now coming to light in a court case between the Assassination Archives and Research Center and the CIA regarding failure to respond to a properly submitted FOIA request.

This is the case, excerpts below.

In a few days, Trump takes office, and maybe—just maybe—we’ll finally get to the bottom of all of this.

That intense and horizon-expanding journey will be the subject of an upcoming post; In a matter of months, with the assistance of ChatGPT and GROK AI, I have built an extraordinarily useful set of business management tools to streamline this business—making it radically more efficient than it has been in several decades.

I am stunned, every day, seeing what I was able to build so quickly and how useful it is.

I feel compelled to share what I have personally experienced using AI for this project, because it is genuinely transformative. I have said recently to a few people that AI has made me younger; and in two very real ways—it has.

It would have been completely beyond my comprehension three years ago that I could or would have been able to do what I have recently done in such a short time and to such a high degree of utility and quality—by myself—on this project.

But I did it—and it was at once creatively exhilarating, technically satisfying, yet worrisome. AI is literally eating my lunch (or the lunch of a small team that in years past I would have had to hire.)

I’ll dive into that story and explore the implications of what is happening with AI and software development soon in a dedicated post.

Suffice it to say that this use case for AI is accelerating at a pace beyond comprehension. I have worked with software engineers with Masters degrees and PhDs from top universities who were less capable and as fast at creating useful, tested, documented, and working software.

So for today: Here’s the story of how I wrote code in mere minutes while cooking bacon.

The backstory for today’s “bacon and AI” moment:

Part of the software toolset that I recently built for this business includes a bulk email feature, which is a common need in firms both small and large.

If you want to send a nicely formatted boilerplate email to all the current tenants (there are a few hundred tenants), there is now a cool popup tool in my web-app suite that creates a list of all names associated with each leased property; there are checkmarks next to each name in a scrolling list on the right side; and on the left is a composer panel that supports markdown so that one can easily create HTML formatted emails with optional attachments.

You can uncheck names if needed, and then when you’re ready, just hit “send”—and the tool does the rest: it creates a personalized message for each tenant, sends it via the company email server along with confirmation in a status bar at the bottom of the screen, and finally logs and tracks the results.

My design strategy for business software is to do what I call context-aware “smart” workflows right inside the web-based tools that you use every day running the business. Minimizing clicks and unnecessary keystrokes is my style.

With properly designed and integrated features, there should be no need, for instance, to switch tasks and open a separate email program like Outlook or MailChimp and juggle a list of recipients while copy/pasting content from some other tool. Also, if you want to see recent emails and replies to a given set of tenants—that, too, should be a simple in-context quick search and one click away.

The most common tasks that you need to do while using my new software suite are therefore all right at your fingertips, built in. I even included a “sticky note” feature that allows you to have searchable, contextually relevant notes always on screen (or attached to specific PDF documents.)

These “smart notes” can also generate reminders for you (if the text of your note starts with “Remind me to…” and includes a date and time or words like “tomorrow” or “next week”, for instance, it auto creates an on-screen reminder popup that appears on that date/time.)

What I learned by using the AI to develop just that one feature will be covered in my later posts, because the process and insight that I gained from it blew me away.

AI is learning to reason, not just generate clever regurgitations.

People love using sticky notes, and I scratch that itch in a modern and very convenient way with my new suite: it looks and ‘feels’ like a post-it note, but without the paper and mess. 3M is going to lose some business from this office!

My “smart notes” can also do simple tabular calculations, to eliminate the need to fish out a calculator or excel just to total up some quick figures. Calculations are built right into the sticky note.

You just type the word “calculate:” and then put figures on separate lines; after double-clicking, the note converts “K” to thousands, formats the figures in a small table, and computes the sum.

If you change the numbers and double-click, it updates them.

Last week, I sent out a bulk email to all of the tenants on Thursday, wishing them a Happy Thanksgiving. As you might imagine, when you have a couple of hundred email addresses, you’ll invariably get a few “bounce” email messages for addresses that no longer work for one reason or another; sometimes because the address is wrong or the account was deleted, or sometimes because the recipient’s mail system is full and can’t accept new messages.

I got a small handful of these “bounce backs” emails on Thursday; so I opened a sticky note and wrote myself a reminder:

“remind me to fix the bounced email issue on 12/2/24 at 8am.”

That reminder just popped up on my screen at work, but I had already resolved it before leaving home….

This morning, while I was cooking bacon in the oven, I had an idea about how to automate the handling of these “bounces” using some pre-existing code fragments.

I sat in my office chair for a few minutes and put the oven mitt on the table in front of me while I typed.

I gave the AI that I use for code generation a sample program that I had created before —it had all the basic functions already in it that would be needed to both access a mail server (using IMAP, for the techies) and a MySQL database.

I highlighted the sample code in my editor, and wrote to the AI:

“Using this existing code, please create a new node.js script from it that will access the inbox for communications@somewhere.com (the email address from which we sent bulk emails, for example.)  Lookup the account connection details using what is already in the code. Find all emails with the subject 'undelivered email returned to sender' whether or not they are marked read.  Parse these and extract the original email recipients that they were sent to. Then find those email addresses in the MySQL table I use to store email addresses for tenants and mark each bounced email address for the tenant as ‘deleted’ since it no longer works.”

This instruction is very similar to what I might have written in an email and sent to a young programmer four years ago.

I then stood up, put on the oven mitt and went back into the kitchen to take the bacon out of the oven (which was perfectly cooked by then.) I glanced over my shoulder as I left the room—only to see that the AI had already finished its task.

When I came back to my home office desk, the new code was done—and when I ran it later at the office…it just worked.

It looked for the bounced emails in the sending account’s inbox and cleaned up my mailing list by soft deleting the broken emails. The old email addresses are still in the database; I just tagged them with a ‘soft delete’ flag so that the rest of the system would no longer try to use them.

As I was driving to work, I thought about what this one small example meant. This task, had I wanted to do it a few years ago, would have taken me or another programmer I assigned it to the better part of a day to figure out how to do, if we had to do some initial research on how to connect to IMAP mail servers first, and start from scratch; it would then have taken 10 or 20 minutes of debugging on top of that, maybe more.

Instead of 4-6 hours of work for expensive programmers, I got working code to resolve these bounced email messages in under a minute while cooking bacon—and I did it by using conversational language with an AI.

I’ll dive deeper into what all of this means in my follow up post, but suffice it to say this: in the context of software development, AI has already totally revolutionized the way software is done—and there is no going back.

Pardon me while I munch a bit of bacon now and figure out how I’m going to stay employed.

Update: consider also the time savings by staff here in the property management office. If I gave someone the task to do this manually: “Go find the communications inbox in the Thunderbird email program; look for emails that are bounces—they look like this, but maybe also like this; then find the original recipient in the email that bounced, and write it down on a sticky note; then go find a tenant in the system who has that email, and remove the broken email from that one screen I showed you last week…” to do all that for seven emails would have been 15 minutes or more of “labor”.

Now it’s just…fixed. In the snap of a finger.

The important takeaway for me here is this: valuing BTC or other cryptocurrencies in dollar terms—as though the primary purpose of them is to “invest” dollars so as to yield more fiat dollars—is a category error.

The point of cryptocurrencies (and precious metals) is that they are a “store of value” that is divorced from the dollar. Therefore, it is not so much the case that BTC is “rising” against the dollar, as it is that the dollar is “falling” against BTC.
